  • Duties listed are at the full performance GS-07 level.
  • Grows seedlings, prepares seed/media, sows and transplants, fertilizes, irrigates, and controls insects and diseases.
  • Performs the full range of moderately complex and recurring seed extraction techniques using a variety of specialized equipment.
  • Schedules, organizes and performs technical seed processing.
  • Independently plans, organizes, and performs all activities involved with the shipment of native plant material and/or seed, including data management, client contact and billing.
  • Conducts complex laboratory tests in support of native seed needs for restoration and/or conservation.
  • Assists higher level specialists by compiling data, editing and proofreading proposals and manuscripts related to nursery and seed extraction.
  • Recommends experimental testing methods and techniques to enhance nursery and seed extraction.

Qualifications

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Specialized Experience Requirement:

For the GS-05 level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-04 grade level. Specialized experience includes one or more of the following: Assisting with field work for projects related to vegetation management and botany, including taking measurements, recording observations, identifying species, seeding or planting, and fertilizer or pesticide treatments; and/or Recognizing various stages of plant development including seedling growth, health and pest related plant biology including taxonomy, anatomy, ecology, and physiology to ensure successful seed extraction; and/or Applying appropriate biological science methods and techniques to accomplish a variety of technical duties common to a nursery/extractory/orchard.

OR

A bachelor's degree or 4 years of successfully completed education above high school (120 semester/180 quarter hours) with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics and at least 6 semester hours of courses must be directly related to the position to be filled.

OR

Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (in excess of the first 60 semester/90 quarter hours) and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited business ,secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.

For the GS-06 level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-05 grade level. Specialized experience includes two or more of the following: Performing plant production and seed harvesting activities at a seedling nursery or extractor which included preparing seed beds, planting seed, irrigation, fertilization, pesticide applications, harvesting, and monitoring; and/or Performing field work for projects related to vegetation management and botany including taking measurements, recording observations, identifying species, seeding or planting, and fertilizer or pesticide treatment; and/or Organizing collections of seed and vegetative materials and assisted with conducting surveys for sensitive plants in project areas that included on-the-ground reconnaissance and record examination; and/or Recording and compiling vegetation and botanical data for use in analysis and reporting.

OR

One full year (18 semester/27 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level coursework that is directly related to the work of the position (such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture).

OR

Combinations of graduate level education that is directly related to the position and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

HIRING EVENT INFORMATION:
This National Nursery and Genetics hiring effort is critical to accomplishing reforestation needs and successfully implementing the REPLANT Act across the National Forest System. This includes positions for multiple components of the reforestation pipeline. Positions filled through this event will contribute to reforestation and restoration work directly related to the agency's mission, working to promote healthy, diverse, and productive forests and grasslands across the nation.

Work Schedule: Positions may be filled with a full-time or permanent seasonal work schedule. Permanent Seasonal positions will be filled as 13/13 or 18/8, where full time work is guaranteed for 13 or 18 pay periods and when not working, you will be placed in non-pay/non-duty status.

Physical Demands: The work requires considerable physical exertion, such as lifting and carrying heavy loads, and regular and recurring walking and bending. The duration of the activity contributes to the arduous nature of the job. There may be special requirements for agility or dexterity such as exceptional hand and eye coordination.

Work Environment: Work is performed in an office, greenhouse, extractory, cooler, freezer, and/or field environment. The work involves regular and recurring moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g., working with fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and other potentially irritant chemicals or plants; working outdoors in adverse weather conditions with risk of exposure to poison ivy and long-term sun exposure; working with heavy farming equipment; working inside under cold/hot, loud, dusty conditions with possible exposure to insects/animals/fungus or signs of such insects/animals/fungi. You may be required to use protective clothing such as gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves, hard hats, respirators, ear plugs.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Employees are required to wear PPE while performing duties associated with their work.
