Duties

Help
  • Safely operate farm-type wheeled tractors, tractor mounted agricultural implements and complex riding mowers for seed orchard cultural operations. Safely operate tractors and equipment on public roads.
  • Safely operate light trucks to transport equipment and debris to and from work sites. Follow detailed instructions such as type of fertilizer to use or the kind of seed to dispense.
  • Receive and follow special instructions such as the depth to plow a field or dig a ditch, spacing between furrows, and depth to plant a crop.
  • Select appropriate gears, power settings, and speeds forequipment operations, based on various soil conditions.
  • Calibrate seeding, spraying, and other application equipment.
  • Operate motor vehicles on public roads and highways as well as installation roads. Operate farm-type tractors and towed or attached equipment to maintain grounds and road medians and perform farming functions.
  • Determine best methods and equipment for accomplishing assignments and developing plans and methods of work by specific dates and times.

  • You may be required to push, lift and carry objects weighing 50 pounds or more.
  • Frequently pushes heavy equipment and other material.

You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered eligible for this position. HIRING EVENT INFORMATION:

This National Nursery and Genetics hiring effort is critical to accomplishing reforestation needs and successfully implementing the REPLANT Act across the National Forest System. This includes positions for multiple components of the reforestation pipeline. Positions filled through this event will contribute to reforestation and restoration work directly related to the agency's mission, working to promote healthy, diverse, and productive forests and grasslands across the nation.

Work Schedule: Multiple. Positions may be filled with a full-time or permanent seasonal work schedule. Permanent Seasonal positions will be filled as 13/13 or 18/8, where full time work is guaranteed for 13 or 18 pay periods and when not working, you will be placed in non-pay/non-duty status.

Travel - Occasional

Physical Efforts: Requires walking, bending, stooping and sitting. Frequent lifting of materials packaged in standard bags, boxes, pails, tubs etc. required during storage and application of project materials. The terrain is mostly level, but muddy work conditions are frequently encountered. Position requires operation of equipment such as tractors for long periods of time. Work requires considerable sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, and other awkward and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts and carries item weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally lifts heavier items.

Work Environment: The majority of the work will be outdoors, which often involves exposure to wind, rain, cold, heat, mud, dust and pollen from sources such as agricultural fields and native plants. Little or no protection is provided from the elements of varying seasonal weather. Indoor work includes periods at a computer terminal. Work requires the handling of pesticides and fertilizers which require special protective clothing, respirator mask and other protective equipment. Must be able to wear a respirator and use other personnel protective equipment (PPE) such as hearing protection, hard hats, boots, and goggles.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Employees are required to wear personal protective equipment while performing duties associated with their field of work.
