Duties

Help
  • Makes independent decisions on technical matters based on current standard practices and techniques, and the work is performed largely without direct supervision.
  • Operates gasoline or diesel-powered engineering and construction equipment with wheeled or crawler type traction in all types of terrain environments.
  • Operate vehicles that may be equipped with auxiliary attachments such as plows, blades, blowers, mowers, sweepers, or sanding units.
  • May operate heavy equipment in support of fire suppression activities on fire lines and to reclaim burned land.
  • Completes minor maintenance projects such as cleaning culverts and ditches; clearing brush and other debris from roads and/or fire lines; installing cattle guards, culverts, signs, and/or fences; removing snow, etc.
  • Assist in the completion of annual property inventories and/or reviews.
  • Conduct inspections on contracts to ensure contracted work is well tracked and documented.
  • Use equipment to excavate, backfill, grade, or level earth such as breaking new ground for trails, roads, dams, dikes, reservoirs, culverts, water developments, structural facilities, campgrounds, utility lines, concrete pads, construction sites, etc
  • Ability to read, understand, and work to fire lines from specifications, drawings, and grade stakes provided by engineers.
  • Conduct assessments of existing road conditions to determine road maintenance needs.
  • Coordinates the completion of major equipment/vehicle repairs with appropriate personnel.
  • Carry out standardized welding operations to join a variety of different kinds of parts or components on items such as kiosks, shelters, grates, gates, cattle guards, culverts, etc.

There is no specific length of training or experience required; however, you must be able to demonstrate through experience shown in the resume materials, that you possess the skill level that has equipped you with the particular job elements to successfully perform the duties of Engineering Equipment Operator without more than normal supervision.

Physical Demands:
Heavy physical effort is required in constantly climbing in and out of different machines, and pushing and pulling levers continuously while machine is in operation. Work is strenuous because of the large equipment operated, the adjustments made, and the adverse operating conditions. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces. The incumbent is required to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds and often puts forth similar effort when pushing, pulling, turning and positioning parts, assemblies, equipment and tools.

Work Environment:
The operation of large and complicated gasoline or diesel-powered engineering and construction equipment in difficult circumstances increases exposure and risk of injury. The incumbent works both inside and outside and is exposed to hot and humid weather and/or extremely cold weather with temperatures ranging from below 0 to above 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Ice, road oils, and other items such as loose gravel and rocks may create hazardous conditions. The operator is subjected to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, oils, solvents, and fumes from motors and exhausts. When working inside, the incumbent must ensure proper ventilation to minimize fumes caused by equipment or vehicles. The incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, abrasions, bruises and strains while servicing and operating equipment. The incumbent is required to follow all prescribed safety practices and use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as protective hearing devices and hard hats to prevent injury.

Additional information

Susanville, Alturas, and Cedarville, California are career seasonal positions. You will be in pay status for at least 6 months, but less than 12 months per calendar year. When work and/or funds are unavailable, you will be placed into non-pay status. Pay status may be less than 6 months during initial appointment.

El Centro, California is a permanent full-time position with no requirement to be placed into non-pay status.
