Duties

Help
  • Select and mark timber for sale in areas where there are familiar variations in species, age classes, or similar silviculture conditions, sometimes leading a small crew of less experienced technicians.
  • Perform sample surveys of forest stands to locate and estimate the quantity of commercial timber within the stand, using accepted cruising practices and data collection techniques.
  • Perform work directly related to wild land fire suppression and control activities including suppression, preparedness, prevention, monitoring, hazardous fuels reduction, and prescribed burning for habitat enhancement.
  • Perform weed control activities, which consists primarily of herbicide applications, but also includes mechanical control methods.

  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This is a Term position scheduled to last 3 years. A term position may be extended to a maximum of six years depending upon the needs of management.
  • Term employment is subject to a one year trial period. Employees serving a trial period can be removed with limited appeal rights.
  • Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime.
  • This position requires the applicant and incumbent to pass an arduous physical fitness test, which includes a Pack Test (3 miles in 45 minutes with a 45-pound pack).

Qualifications

Management may select at any of the grade levels announced, GS-05 or GS-06. This recruitment provides promotion opportunity to the target grade, GS-06, of the position without further competition when selectee is eligible and recommended by management.

Forestry Technician, GS-0462-05:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1. Providing support with tree measurements and species identification; 2. Using timber cruising tools and techniques such as a compass, Geographic Positioning System (GPS), or aerial photos; and 3. Assisting with wildland fire management practices. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

OR

Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. (Transcripts must be provided)

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages. (Transcripts must be provided)

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1. Completing timber cruises to select and mark merchantable timber; 2. Conducting area surveys to evaluate tree volume and growth, disease, or noxious weeds; 3. Participating in wildland fire management activities, prescribed burning, wildlife suppression, fire tower operations, and/ or fire standby. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

OR

Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Environmental Science. (Transcripts must be provided)

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages. (Transcripts must be provided)
