Duties

Help
  • Serves as a technical expert in medical diagnostics for the Health Physics Division, Defense Centers for Public Health-Aberdeen (DCPH-A).
  • Provides advice and guidance on matters involving the professional and specialized work of the Program, or coordination of work within DCPH-A or with other activities.
  • Review survey/study plans and reports for adequacy, soundness of recommendations, accomplishment of objectives and adherence to regulatory requirements and policy.
  • Review and modify radiation protection standards and procedures and proposed regulations for medical and research facilities, high energy accelerators, radioactive material containing commodities, and medical x-ray sources.
  • Perform radiation protection surveys of DCPH-A laboratories and operations using radiation or radioactive materials.

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • Business Travel/TDY up to 25% of the time may be required.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
  • One-year probationary period may be required.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education/experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirement for Health Physicist:

A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.

OR
B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education.

OR
C. Certification: Certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A. You must attach the certification.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience GS-11:

One year of specialized experience which includes: providing guidance to managers with regard to radiation surveys; and conducting health hazard surveys.

Specialized Experience GS-12:

One year of specialized experience which includes: using radiation producing devices; reviewing radioactive materials authorizations; and assisting with inspections to ensure compliance with federal regulations.

Specialized Experience GS-13:
One year of specialized experience which includes: using radiation producing devices; reviewing radioactive materials authorizations for compliance with radioactive materials safety instruction, regulation and authorization, such as medical NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) license; and conducting inspections to ensure compliance with federal regulations and other organization standards.
