About the Position: Serves as a journey man level Lock and Dam Hydraulic Equipment Mechanic responsible to maintain and repair the various hydraulic and pneumatic equipment that enables the functioning of the locks.

Duties

Help
  • Independently identify when hydraulic equipment needs service, troubleshoot when equipment has failed, and perform equipment maintenance and repair work.
  • Installs, rebuilds, or replaces equipment and components of hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems.
  • Makes frequent periodic inspections to determine condition and need for cleaning, lubrication, adjustment, and replacement of parts or other repairs.
  • Lubricates, inspects, troubleshoots, maintains, and repairs all hydraulic lock operating equipment and spillway, pumping plant, fish ladder, and garden machinery to facilitate reliable and consistent operation of the systems and/or equipment.
  • Disassembles, repairs or rebuilds, reassembles, installs, tests, modifies, and retests hydraulic and pneumatic equipment to update, maintain, or restore operations.
  • Installs sensors, regulating, and safety devices designed to notify operators of system information, motion, or speed of operation.
  • Coordinates troubleshooting, installation, or repair of hydraulic, pneumatic, and other mechanical systems with the electrical team to make sure hazardous power is suspended during these activities.
  • Contributes to mechanical or industrial maintenance and repair work that occurs in and around the locks, to include diesel and gasoline engines of all types to keep equipment operational.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License.
  • Pre-employment and annual physicals required, to include the ability to wear a respirator, and needing to see red/green color spectrum.
  • Position requires the wearing and/or use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Subject to call 24 hours per day, 7 days per week to address emergency situations that may arise.
  • Must complete the Defensive Driving Course within 6 months of appointment.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a LOCK AND DAM HYDRAULIC EQUIPMENT MECHANIC without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common tasks such as performing routine installation, maintenance or repair on a variety of hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical equipment and systems. I can utilize meters, sensors, and gauges to read and assess equipment status to troubleshoot and repair equipment failure. I can perform general lubrication and major or minor maintenance operations of general systems on the project, including mechanical work, greasing, and general repairs to support the overall maintenance of the project facilities and equipment. I work under normal supervision of a supervisor or work leader who reviews my work for completion.

  • Physical Effort: Work requires standing, stooping, bending, climbing, reaching, and maneuvering in cramped spaces. Regularly lifts 50 pounds and occasionally 100-150 pounds. Hoists, lifts, hand trucks, and other workers are available to assist with heavier items. Incumbent drives a standard motor vehicle, such as a pick-up truck, to different areas of the project to transport tools, equipment, etc. in the performance of maintenance duties.
  • Working Conditions: Works inside in areas that are noisy, dirty, and greasy. Outside work is in all weather, including rain and snow, and over or near water. The incumbent is subject to cuts, bruises, falls, scrapes, fumes, burns, abrasions, and danger to the fingers, hands, and other parts of the body from cutting tools, grinding wheels, rotating work pieces, and moving machine parts. This position will be required to work at heights, near or over water, and in confined spaces. This position may require wearing a respirator.
