This is an indefinite position that may convert to permanent without further competition.

JOB SUMMARY: The primary purpose of this position is to maintain, troubleshoot, remove, repair, install, certify, test and perform operational checks on the turboprop engines, propellers, and associated propulsion system components.

NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED. This is an excepted position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the Connecticut Air National Guard. Applicants who are not currently a member of the Connecticut Air National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership and employment in the Connecticut Air National Guard. The major duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Removes, installs, certifies, repairs, modifies, overhauls, and installs turboprop engines, reduction gear boxes, turbine modules, compressor modules, auxiliary power units, propellers and related propeller components as required.
  • Modifies engines, propellers, auxiliary power units, and components in accordance with Time Compliance Technical Orders (TCTO) directives; removes and installs engine quick change kits; prepares engines for installation and installs engine and propeller assemblies on aircraft.
  • Performs operational checks of installed propellers, engines, auxiliary power units and sub-systems during aircraft maintenance ground runs in accordance with approved checklists.
  • Performs isochronal and special evaluations on engines, propellers and auxiliary power units.
  • Performs aircraft full power runs and complete engine and propeller efficiency checks.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work assignments are performed indoors and outdoors in inclement weather; on icy, wet, and slippery ramps, aircraft surfaces, work stands; and in extreme temperature and humidity. The incumbent is subject to dangers from toxic fumes, dust, dirt, grease, lubricants, paints, and solvents. Dangers also involve high-pressure air and fluids, and fast actuating metal aircraft surfaces such as landing gears, speed brakes, and flaps. Work assignments are subject to engine noise, heat blast, intake suction, rotating propellers, explosive munitions, electrical voltage, cartridge actuating devices, liquid oxygen, and flammable and explosive aircraft fuels, etc. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of cuts, burns, electrical shock, strains, and bone fractures.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: The incumbent is required to stand, stoop, bend, and reach. The incumbent frequently lifts equipment and components weighing up to 10 pounds, and often lifts and carries assemblies weighing up to 50 pounds. Hoists, hand trucks, lifts, and other employees are available to assist when handling heavy or awkward items. Work assignments require the employee to climb steps and ladders and stand on slippery or inclined surfaces.

Qualifications

GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Experience or training that has provided the ability to perform assembly and disassembly operations and make prescribed modifications to aircraft engines, engine assemblies, and accessories in accordance with technical specifications, procedures and requirements. Experience using hand and power tools common to the trade.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Your resume and any other supporting documentation you wish to provide must clearly substantiate you currently possess 18 months of specialized experience in the following:

  • Experience or training performing standard, routine assembly and disassembly operations and making prescribed modifications to aircraft engines, engine assemblies, and accessories.
  • Experience or training performing maintenance overhaul, troubleshooting, testing, and repair of aircraft engines, engine components, and power trains for fixed and/or rotary wing aircraft.
  • Experience determining maintenance needed from work orders, inspection reports, historical record, and by own diagnosis.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of gas turbine or reciprocating aircraft engines and accessory systems in order to troubleshoot, overhaul, maintain, repair, modify, service, and test different types of engines and related equipment in the aircraft, test cells, or maintenance shops.
  • Ability to determine methods of repair to use, degree of disassembly necessary, and serviceability of parts or rework required before reassembly.
  • Knowledge of engine repair practices in order to identify and correctly choose between alternative methods and trades techniques, to adapt accepted repair procedures to new or unfamiliar engines or accessory systems, to anticipate tools and parts to be required, and to set up the work area.
  • Skill in the use of measuring instruments, such as vibration analyzers to detect and locate the source of vibration in engines, propellers, reduction gears, and/or engine rotors.
  • Ability to utilize pyrometers to check engine combustion, and test benches, which read multiple parameters in oil, air vacuum, and torque.
  • Skill in the interpretation and use of technical orders, manufactures catalogs, maintenance bulletins, etc. to obtain the technical information needed for troubleshooting, assembling and trimming engines.
  • Ability includes interpreting trouble reports or observing instrument readings, etc.
  • Ability to make a tentative diagnoses, selects needed tools, and test equipment.
  • Ability to disassemble the engine or accessory systems to locate the defect, determine the cause and determine the repairs needed.

COMPATIBLE MILITARY ASSIGNMENT: All applications will be considered regardless of AFSC. Incumbent will be required to be assigned to compatible military position within 1 year of selection. The selected individual may be required to attend formal technician school training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: This position is covered by the medical monitoring program. Individual selected must undergo a preemployment physical examination prior to appointment. This position requires a security clearance (secret) which the applicant must possess or be able to obtain a clearance within one year of appointment. For positions requiring the operation of motor vehicles, candidates must have a valid state driver's license for the state in which they live or are principally employed.

Additional information

Primary Change of Station (PCS) relocation expenses will NOT be paid.

Incentive Termination without Recoupment: If you accept a Military Technician (Mil Tech) Permanent position where membership in the National Guard is a condition of employment, your bonus will be terminated with no recoupment as long as you have served at least 6 months of the bonus contract following receipt of the initial bonus payment.
