Joining Customs & Border Protection will allow you to use your expertise in telecommunication principles, concepts and methods to support telecommunication systems and services. Apply for this exciting opportunity to strengthen Homeland Security by performing technical and analytical work pertaining to telecommunication systems, facilities, services and procedures. This position starts at a salary of $82,830.00 (GS-12, Step 1) to $107,680.00 (GS-12, Step 10) with promotion potential to $107,680.00 (GS-12 Step 10).

In this Telecommunications Specialist, you will serve as an expert consultant in telecommunications technology, processes, and installation procedures, with the capability to not only troubleshoot complex issues, but design systems to improve communications for end users nationwide. Typical work assignments include:

  • Participating in all phases of installation, troubleshooting, repair, redesigning, maintenance, and operational testing of telecommunications systems.
  • Configuring and maintaining the telecommunications network to service applicable law enforcement mission applications such as intrusion detection systems, video surveillance systems, and the local area network (LAN) based upon a knowledge of both communications technology and the operational needs of the end user.
  • Preparing feasibility and suitability studies on new and existing telecommunications technology to support mission needs of border patrol agents and mission support staff.
  • Designing, coordinating, and conducting a variety of technical evaluations on a wide range of voice communications systems, data communications systems, video surveillance, sensor intrusion systems, networks, and facilities.
  • Maintaining proficiency regarding technological advancements and current rules and regulations through attendance of seminars, conferences, service-sponsored training, self-initiated training programs, and frequent review of manufacturer's publications and technical manuals.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for the GS-12 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:

  • Inspecting newly installed telecommunication equipment for conformance to performance requirements
  • Installing, configuring, troubleshooting, repairing, maintaining and operational testing of telecommunications systems including, but not limited to: voice communications, telecommunications, stationary and mobile video and radar surveillance systems, microwave systems, fiber optic equipment, wide area network (WAN), local area network (LAN), switched equipment, intrusion detection and access control systems
  • Configuring and maintaining the telecommunications network to service applications such as intrusion detection systems, encrypted voice land/mobile radio communication systems, and the local area network (LAN)
  • Developing guidance for applying communications policy, procedures, techniques, equipment, and methods to a variety of work situations and various degrees or levels of telecommunications controls
You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience or substitution of education, if applicable, as described above and meet the basic requirement listed below.

Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study - electrical or electronic engineering, mathematics, physics, public utilities, statistics, computer science, telecommunications management, information systems management, business administration, industrial management, or other fields related to the position to be filled.

Other Education: Communications/electronics or automatic data processing training in technical institutes or business schools above the high school level or in Armed Forces schools that included advanced instruction in addition to basic courses, may be substituted for general experience on a month-for-month basis.

OR

Experience: Experience in evaluating, analyzing, developing, managing, or improving communications systems, procedures, and requirements that demonstrated knowledge of current developments and trends in communications concepts and technology.

Assignments may require frequent travel from the sector to remote job sites which can result in over twelve-hour workdays or overnight stays.

The incumbent may be required to work long and irregular hours beyond their normal scheduled shift to include weekends and nights.
