Help
  • Assists the Supervisory Park Ranger with developing and executing any one or more of the programs and with providing advice and guidance to lower graded rangers and plans day-to-day individual assignments.
  • Works closely with other personnel involved in overlapping program areas, other agencies, local volunteers and interested or affected Federal, state, local and county government officials to complete assignments.
  • Reviews and writes updates to segments of the Operational Management Plan (OMP); gathers factual data used to justify and support improvements to the project's programs and facilities for review by the Supervisory Park Ranger.
  • Inspects campgrounds, picnic areas, Government buildings, trails, roads, water shores and parking areas: monitoring visitor use; inspecting the quality of operations and services; and identifying additional recreation needs.
  • Assists with the maintenance of the project's wildlife, fish and vegetation management plans; identifying local cultural or historical sites and structures.
  • Maintains communications with and cooperates closely, when needed, with California Department of Forestry, Fish and Game, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and U.S. Forest Service.
  • Assists with the protection of rare and endangered plant and animal species; and improving fisheries and other wildlife by developing and maintaining habitat projects.
  • Ensures the safety of the visiting public, Corps personnel and contractors at the park's resources.; enforces the project's policies, rules and regulations by issuing warnings and/or citations when visitor violations are encountered.
  • Patrols the project's recreation areas, camping grounds, picnicking sites and water areas.
  • Assists in maintaining the visitor information center, maintaining existing displays; assisting with the development of new displays; and suggesting ways to improve or alter the visitor center to enhance the visitor's experience.
  • Drafts modifications to existing contracts and to new contracts to meet project needs; administers assigned contracts by: checking progress and completion of work.

  • Incumbent must receive a minimum of 24 hours of personal protection /unarmed self defense, situational evaluation and tactical communication training within two years of employment.
  • Incumbent must possess or be able to acquire first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and blood-borne pathogen training.
  • Incumbent must possess or be able to acquire Title 36 Citation Authority within one year of employment.
  • Required to wear prescribed uniform as identified in regulation, ER 1130-2-422, dated 1 October 1991.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Possession of or the ability to acquire a state driver's license.
  • Ability to work nights and/or weekends depending on the needs of the project to which the employee is assigned.
  • Ability to obtain a valid CPR certificate.
  • Incumbent is required to work in adverse weather conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain, wind, etc.).
  • Occasional overnight travel required (approximately 10%) for training, conferences or rotational assignments.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Experience required:
To qualify based on your work experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job.
To qualify, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade/level GS-05. Specialized experience is defined as: includes developing and maintaining park recreation and resource management programs and performing park management functions associated with park safety and security.


Education Substitution:
I have successfully completed one full academic year of graduate-level education with major study in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
I have successfully completed all the requirements for a bachelor's degree and am claiming Superior Academic Achievement. In order to be creditable under this provision, Superior Academic Achievement must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled, such as that identified in B above. Superior Academic Achievement is based on: (1) Class Standing - You must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses; OR (2) Grade-Point Average (G.P.A.) - You must have a grade-point average of either (a) 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on your official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or (b) 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.; OR (3) Honor Society Membership - You may be considered eligible based on membership in one of the approved national scholastic honor societies listed by the Association of College Honor Societies (https://www.achsnatl.org/). (NOTE: You must attach a copy of your transcripts and/or verification of class standing for further verification.)

Combination Education & Experience:
I have the specialized experience as described in A, but less than one year; and I have some graduate education as described in B, but less than the required one year. I have computed the percentage of the requirements that I meet, and the total is at least 100% (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then, divide your semester hours of graduate education by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.).
