Summary

The Pathways Internship Program allows students to join VA in career positions that emphasize long-term training and development. Assignments build on prior training and are designed to provide the opportunity to gain knowledge and work experience in the application of concepts, practices and procedures of administrative and office assistance. This opportunity is open to current Bachelor or Master's degree seeking students at a qualifying educational institution on a half-time bases or more.

This position is being filled under the Pathways Internship Program. The program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with paid work opportunities in agencies to explore Federal careers while still in school. The Internship provides managers a ready source of student employees and potential permanent employees upon completion of the program requirements. It also provides the student with work experience directly related to the curriculum studies or career goals while offering eligibility for non-competitive conversion to permanent employment upon completion.   • Prepares and presents program data.
  • Prepares and maintains statistical data to provide input for service reports.
  • Collects, compiles, consolidates and edits report submission.
  • Utilizes automation equipment and computer software to complete assignments.
  • Handles calls of a routine nature, and refers others to appropriate personnel.
  • Composes statements or develops factual information which supplement model letters or standard paragraphs.
  • Prepares, composes. or reviews correspondence prepared for the purpose of obtaining or supplying information.
  • Screens outgoing materials for proper format and to insure they are assembled and addressed in accordance with appropriate regulations.
  • Arranges records for storage/ reference, schedule disposition, and retrieval.
  • Performs general filing including alphabetical, numerical, chronological filing systems to file reports for respondents records, publications, regulations, and directives.

Work Schedule: Part Time; No less than 20 hours per pay period and not more than 79 hours per pay period.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 05/12/2023.

Internship Program: To be eligible, applicants must be accepted for enrollment or currently enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis as defined by the institution in which you are enrolled.

NOTE: YOU MUST PROVIDE PROOF OF ENROLLMENT ON A FULL OR HALF-TIME BASIS OR ACCEPTANCE OF ENROLLMENT AT THE TIME OF APPLICANTION- FAILURE TO DO SO WILL RESULT IN LOST CONSIDERATION.

This position will be filled at the GS-4 grade level. To qualify, the applicant must first meet the minimum requirements listed above.

  • General Experience: 1 year or 52 weeks of general experience, any type of work that demonstrates the ability to perform the work of the position or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation; for instance, general clerical work or reception duties., OR
  • Education: Applicants may substitute education for the experience required. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed 2 years of study above high school or possess an associate's degree. (transcript required, official or unofficial)

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: The position requires no specific physical requirements. The applicant must be able to concentrate on computer screens for lengthy periods of time and remain sedentary. The incumbent must be able to travel about the medical center to attend meetings.
