Help

The primary purpose of the position is to serve as an IT Cybersecurity Specialist (INFOSEC). Typical work assignments include:

  • Implementing security requirements such as those resulting from laws, regulations or Presidential directives.
  • Reviewing and evaluating security incident response policies.
  • Resolving integration issues related to the implementation of new systems with the existing infrastructure.
  • Conducting risk and vulnerability assessments of planned and installed information systems to identify vulnerability, risks and protection needs of activities.
  • Providing technical advice and guidance to Department managers and other technical specialists on significant information security problems and issues.
  • Coordinating and providing technical support to enterprise-wide cyber defense technicians to resolve cyber defense incidents.
  • Documenting and escalating incidents (including event's history, status, and potential impact for further action) that may cause ongoing and immediate impact to the environment.

  • This is a telework position. Due to frequent travel requirements, selectee's duty location must reside within 50 miles of the location identified in the announcement. Locality pay will be based on the duty location.

Qualifications

You qualify for the GS-09 grade level if you possess information technology related experience demonstrating each of the four required competencies:

  1. Attention to Detail: Analyzing software to identify areas for improvements;
  2. Customer Service: Providing support to system users;
  3. Oral Communication: Communicating technical information orally to non-technical audiences;
  4. Problem Solving: Providing alternatives to resolve IT issues.
In addition to the above requirement, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at the GS-07 grade level performing the following duties:
  • Communicating computer network concepts to individuals seeking technological support;
  • Providing support to ensure compliance of automated information system security protocols; and
  • Expressing technical information to staff to assist with security problem issues.
OR

Have a Master's or an equivalent graduate degree or successfully completed two (2) full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management or degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks. (You must submit your college transcripts to support your educational claims).

You qualify for the GS-11 grade level if you possess information technology related experience demonstrating each of the four required competencies:
1. Attention to Detail- Reviewing IT systems to identify vulnerabilities;
2. Customer Service- Assessing the needs of IT project stakeholders;
3. Oral Communication- Communicating IT security requirements to stakeholders;
4. Problem Solving- Providing recommendations to resolve IT and/or system issues.

In addition to the above requirement, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at the GS-09 grade level performing at least one of the following duties:
  • Assessing new system design methodologies to improve software quality;
  • Conducting risk assessments of installed information systems to identify protection needs of activities;
  • Ensuring integration of security programs with other IT program services.
OR

Have a Ph.D.; or an equivalent graduate degree or successfully completed three (3) full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D.; or equivalent graduate degree in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management or degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks. (You must submit your college transcripts to support your educational claims).

You qualify for the GS-12 grade level (starting salary depends on duty location) if you possess information technology related experience demonstrating each of the four required competencies:

1. Attention to Detail- Monitoring information systems or networks to ensure compliance of security measures.
2. Customer Service- Identifying the need for updates to security technologies;
3. Oral Communication- Providing recommendations to other technical specialists on IT security issues;
4. Problem Solving- Identifying potential security risk in IT systems and recommending solutions.

In addition to the above requirement, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at the GS-11 grade level performing at least one of the following duties:
  • Controlling authorization level for all personnel requiring user access to automated information systems;
  • Evaluating the security impact of system changes to existing or proposed computerized systems;
  • Conducting studies of all new automated information systems equipment to prepare effective security procedures; and
  • Ensuring compliance of automated information system security protocols and procedures.
National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
