  • This is an entry-level/trainee position description leading to the full performance position description, Legal Assistant, GS-986-07, #67378. The incumbent works in a trainee capacity towards the full performance position.
  • Classroom and on the job training are designed to provide experience and technical competence in the methods, procedures, principles and techniques of the full performance level.
  • The incumbent may be promoted noncompetitively to that grade provided work at the higher levels continues to exist, and the incumbent has demonstrated the ability to perform it and provided further that time-in-grade and other requirements are met.
  • At the full performance level, the incumbent provides technical and administrative support, as well as ensures the proper receipt, control, documentation,

Qualifications

Applicants must meet at least one of the qualifications below:

  • At least fifty-two (52) weeks of specialized experience equivalent to GS-4 grade level or higher in the Federal service that has equipped them with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. This experience includes utilizing knowledge of processes, procedures, and practices that support legal activities; work that involves administrative support in connection with all court proceedings instituted before courts of justice; such as initiating and composing standardized legal documents routinely needed for specific legal actions, reviewing them for correct form and timeliness, and annotating case files and status records to reflect receipt and due date for response or other required actions. (In order to be considered, applicants must indicate the month, day, year and the number of hours worked per week for each position held. If this information is not provided, you will be found ineligible.)
  • Completed four (4) full years of education above high school level leading to a bachelor's degree. NOTE: Transcripts are required to substantiate claimed education. You will not be considered if a transcript is not provided with your application.
  • Have less than the amount of education or experience as described above; however, when combined, their education and experience total 100% of the requirements. To satisfy the educational requirement, submit a copy of your transcripts that includes your name, the name of the educational institution, course title(s), number of credits, grade, and date of completion. Note: One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school you attended has determined to represent one year of study. If this information cannot be obtained from your school, we will consider 18 semester/27 quarter hours to be equal to one year of full-time study.

THESE ARE NOT REMOTE POSITIONS. ALL SELECTED APPLICANTS WILL BE REQUIRED TO LIVE WITHIN A 2-HOUR COMMUTING DISTANCE OF BALTIMORE, MD OR FALLS CHURCH, VA AS OF THE APPOINTMENT DATE.


Please note: the duty station for Falls Church, VA will be moving to Washington, D.C. on or around June 2023.

Salary will be set at the GS-5 step 1 ($42,870). Salary may be set at a higher step for those with prior federal service. No above minimums will be given for superior qualifications.

These are single-grade career ladder positions leading to the full performance level of GS-7.

Additional selections may be made for this vacancy six months from the closing date of this announcement. This Direct Hire announcement may be used to fill the same or similar position in another office.

This is a bargaining unit position represented by AFGE.
