As a POWERED SUPPORT SYSTEMS MECHANIC (SMALL SHOP CHIEF), WG-5378-11, you will serve as a Small Shop Chief (SSC) with the responsibility for the overall operations of a small shop. The position oversees and directs the work of WG-5378, Powered Support Systems Mechanics, who are assigned to the shop. The incumbent performs the full range of non-supervisory work of the shop.

Plans and lays out work to be accomplished in the shop which is then completed by the individual and lower graded worker(s).

Possesses the knowledge and skills found at the journeyman level as well as those required for planning, accomplishing and maintaining a functional shop maintenance program.

Independently determines appropriate maintenance procedures such as how and when the work should be accomplished. Estimates manpower, equipment and material requirements.

Devises and maintains all program plans and records, is skilled in surveillance and troubleshooting techniques, and is able to determine maintenance/repair procedures needed without benefit of technical supervisory guidance.

Plans, organizes and directs shop maintenance programs/procedures under general supervision.

Determines approaches, methods and courses of action required to accomplish the mission of the shop in an effective and efficient manner.

May provide recommendations and input to the supervisor concerning personnel actions such as performance appraisals, awards, position description changes, disciplinary actions, leave, etc.
Performs the same type and level of work as performed within the unit.

Implements safety regulatory requirements. Ensures that other workers in the shop wear appropriate safety equipment and follow pertinent safety precautions.

Participates in various types of readiness preparations, inspections, evaluations, and mobilization and command support exercises. Performs additional duties such as structural firefighting, aircraft fire/crash/rescue duty, security guard, snow removal, munitions loading and handling, heavy equipment operation, maintenance of facilities and equipment. May serve as a member of a team to cope with natural disasters or civil emergencies.

Qualifications

NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED: This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the National Guard. Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform. Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment.

MILITARY MEMBERS WITH BONUSES: Upon acceptance of a military technician position military members who are currently receiving a military Reenlistment/Extension Bonus (REB) or GI Bill-SR Kicker may lose incentive eligibility and may be subject to termination or suspension of incentive (includes indefinite and temporary technicians on assignment for more than 180 days in any continuous 12-month period).

GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Experience or training which demonstrates the knowledge of mechanical maintenance work; ability to read and use technical manuals, illustrations, diagrams and schematics, and skill in the use of equipment and hand tools used in troubleshooting, testing and repairing equipment.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Must have in detail 18 months experience or training removing, adjusting, replacing, cleaning, and installing parts, components, and accessories. In addition to the knowledge and skills found at the journeyman level, the ability to plan and accomplish a functional shop maintenance program is essential. Requires skill in surveillance and troubleshooting techniques. Experience which provided working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic theory applying to powered support equipment and systems; and skill to replace, fit, install, and make adjustments. Experience which provided working knowledge of the makeup and operation of the various individual systems maintained and their interrelationships. Experience reading and interpreting parts lists, manufactures' repair manuals, diagrams, and electrical schematics.
