  • Conduct research that emphasizes the pairing of social, economic, and ecological systems across the urban to rural gradient
  • Define the research objective, determine the research approach, and delineate ways to resolve complexities and ambiguities, and incorporate scientific literature from appropriate disciplines
  • Incorporate a wide variety of methods as well as to develop or modify methodologies, adapt analytical techniques, and engage multiple modes of technology transfer and scientific reporting
  • Collaborate with scientists at other research stations, resource managers at natural resource management agencies, university faculty and graduate and undergraduate students, or tribes
  • Interpret complex research results, making them applicable to field managers and available to other scholars/colleagues
  • Write research proposals to seek funding from sources identified by the scientist or leadership

Qualifications

To qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards.

This is a research scientist position and is classified under the scientist career plan. Research scientists have open-ended promotion potential. Research accomplishments and their impact on the duties and responsibilities of positions are evaluated periodically. The grade level is limited only by the individual's demonstrated ability to perform research of recognized importance to science and technology. Final grade level will be determined by a peer review panel. The purpose of the initial review panel is to determine the grade level upon entry into a position. Candidates being considered for this research position should provide a list of publications for which you have been an author, co-author, or contributor. Basic Requirement for the 0101 Social Science Series

  • Degree: behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

or

  • Combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

or

  • Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.

GS-12: One year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11). Specialized experience at this level includes all of the following:
  • Conducting the full cycle of scientific research (including identifying research topics, defining study objectives, organizing and conducting the research, interpreting the results, and presenting the findings in the form of reports, demonstrations, manuscripts, and other appropriate technology transfer activities) from one or more of the following areas: (1) Applying strategic foresight methods to natural area planning efforts, including recreation planning and shared stewardship implementation; (2) Identifying factors that enhance or inhibit partnership building, collaboration, and consultation with American Indian tribes and Indigenous peoples; (3) The incorporation of diverse cultural views, needs, and values into natural resource planning and management; (4) Economic analysis of ecosystem services provided by natural lands; (5) Social and economic drivers of land management, stewardship, and conservation behaviors; (6) Distributional effects, environmental justice, and equity associated with natural resource policies and programs; (7) Recreational demand and the factors that influence the demand of recreational experiences such as invasive species, climate change, and demographic change; or (8) Policies, practices, and institutions that may influence sustainability, adaptation, and resilience of social-ecological systems and resource-dependent communities.
  • Participating in research teams of regional and/or national importance.
  • Disseminating research findings at conferences or scientific meetings and publishing results in peer-reviewed journals.

Conferred Ph.D. degree that includes research related to social science as applicable to the human dimensions of natural resource management, which includes: survey design and administration; economics; policy analysis; landscape architecture; recreation management; environmental law; environmental planning; social equity and environmental justice; strategic foresight and environmental futures; human dimensions of natural resources; social psychology; demography; or parks, recreation, and tourism management. To qualify based on education, your transcripts must show the conferral of your Ph.D.

GS-13: One year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-12). Graduate level education alone is not qualifying at this grade level. To qualify at this grade, you must possess the specialized experience listed below.Specialized experience at this level includes ALL of the following:

  • Developing and disseminating research findings in collaboration with resource managers and planners for presentation at conferences or scientific meetings and publishing results in peer-reviewed journals.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
