Duties

Help
  • Development, planning, budgeting, and conduct of assigned fish monitoring and research.
  • Review and coordinate requests from State and Federal fishery agencies and Indian tribes regarding facility operation on the Columbia River and submits recommendations to proper authority.
  • Review work reports and research proposals submitted by state and Federal fishery agencies and Indian tribes covering fish facilities operation, fish protective programs, and effects of dam operations on fish resources.
  • Monitors and makes direct observations of anadromous fish passage conditions as well as general fish conditions.
  • Coordinate fish passage facility operation and maintenance through the Supervisory Fish Biologist, Hydroelectric Power Operations Superintendent, Operations Manager, and the Operations Biologist.
  • Monitor the status of anadromous fish runs and resident fish by reviewing fish passage reports and trends for the Columbia and Snake Rivers.
  • Analyze fish passage problems and makes recommendations for changes in project operations and maintenance.
  • Prepare a variety of reports, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and memorandums for fish related activities at Bonneville Dam.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirement for Fish Biologist:

A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in biological science that included at least 6 semester hours in aquatic subjects such as limnology, ichthyology, fishery biology, aquatic botany, aquatic fauna, oceanography, fish culture, or related courses in the field of fishery biology; AND at least 12 semester hours in the animal sciences in such subjects as general zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, entomology, parasitology, ecology, cellular biology, genetics, or research in these fields, or excess course work (beyond the required 6 semester hours) in aquatic subjects.

OR

B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), of which a minimum of 6 semester hours were in aquatic subjects and 12 semester hours were in the animal sciences, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes monitoring and evaluating salmonids (salmon, steelhead, etc.) fish passage structures such as those found at hydroelectric facilities, and experience coordinating or conducting fish studies or research.This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

OR

Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Fish Biology, Aquatic Biology, Wildlife Biology, Zoology, etc. . (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-09).
