Summary

The Environmental Health Perspectives (EHP) Branch is seeking a highly motivated individual to serve a a science advisor to the Editor-in-Chief with expertise in the scientific disciplines of human physiology and disease, biochemistry, environmental toxicology, exposure science, epidemiology, and human and environmental health.

Although not required, a PhD in Environmental Health or related is preferred.

Duties

Help
  • Use scientific expertise and experience in environmental health research to perform an initial evaluation of submitted manuscripts.
  • Evaluate and interpret comments and recommendations from external peer reviewers and editors.
  • Develop and maintain contacts with professional societies and scientists with expertise and interests in the environmental health sciences and research.
  • Develop and present short courses, seminars, and panels on research in the environmental health sciences and on writing and reviewing scholarly research articles.
  • Consult with journal staff to ensure that author and journal standards and requirements are consistent between peer review and journal publication processes.
  • Identify and recommend high-performing contributors and manuscripts for special recognition and promotion.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a Biologist, GS-401 position you must meet the following Education Requirements:

A. Have completed the requirements for a bachelor's (or graduate) degree in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position, from an accredited college or university.
OR
B. Have a combination of experience and education which includes courses comparable to a major in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry or related disciplines appropriate to this position, AND I have appropriate experience or additional education which demonstrates similarly appropriate skills or abilities needed to perform the duties of this position.

In addition, in order to qualify at the GS-13 level, you must meet the following:

You must demonstrate one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: Perform applied human observational research using proven scientific methods; conduct analysis of human observational data using appropriate statistical approaches or models; act as lead author of human observational research manuscripts published in peer-reviewed scholarly journals (i.e., primarily responsible for analyzing, interpreting, and reporting data, and for writing and submitting the manuscript for peer review); participate as a peer reviewer of human observational research manuscripts submitted to scholarly journals; develop and present scientific communications materials to scientific and non-specialist audiences.
