Duties

Help
  • Collects and interprets a variety of survey; selects and adapts engineering precedents, principles and practices associated with surveying operations.
  • Collects, compiles, verifies, and formats data essential to maintain proper survey control at the various office harbors and construction projects.
  • Inspects construction work to assure full compliance with the contract requirements.
  • Contacts designers to obtain information concerning problems, space limitation, and design component arrangements.
  • Ability to maintain, operate and perform minor maintenance and repairs on all survey related equipment, such as vessels, motors, trailers, ATV?s, snowmobiles, and other mechanized equipment.
  • Performs and tests equipment in accordance with established procedures as outlined by manufacturer's literature or the Engineer-in-charge.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license.
  • Must be able to obtain a U.S. Coast Guard or Corps of Engineers license to operate motorboats.
  • Within one year of assignment to this position, must be licensed by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to operate motorboat of 26 feet or less.
  • Must possess an American Red Cross Basic First Aid Certificate or complete said course within one year after appointment.
  • Pre-Employment physical may be required.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. To qualify for the GS-05 grade level, you must have:

A. One year of Specialized experiencewhich includes understanding of surveys; able to locate survey documents; and able to assist with survey equipment.
OR 
B. I have successfully completed a full four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in an appropriate field of engineering, construction, or industrial technology; OR (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as engineering, engineering or industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science, or mathematics with at least 6 of the 24 semester hours in drafting. OR
C. I have the specialized experience as described in A, but less than one year; and I have some education leading to a bachelor's degree but less than required in B. I have computed the percentage of the requirements that I meet, and the total is at least 100% (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then, divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.). To qualify for the GS-06 grade level, you must have:

A. One year of Specialized experience which includes knowledge of preliminary survey set up; able to copy elements from existing drawings to make new drawings; attend work survey trips; and assist employees with reports or data collection.
OR
B. I have successfully completed a half year of graduate level education (9 semester hours) in an appropriate field of study of engineering, construction, engineering or industrial technology, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science or mathematics. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
C. I have the specialized experience as described in A, but less than one year; and I have a bachelor's degree but less than the half year of graduate level education required in B. I have computed the percentage of the requirements that I meet, and the total is at least 100% (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then, divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.). To qualify for the GS-07 grade level, you must have:

A. One year of Specialized experience which includes technical work; assist in assessments and specifications for Hydrographic surveying or dredging systems; assist in corrections of survey and drawings in accordance with applicable standards; assist leads in inspecting work to assure compliance; and provides finding feedback as needed.
OR
B. I am claiming Superior Academic Achievement, I have a GPA of 3.0 or higher when attaining my bachelor's degree. In order to be creditable under this provision, Superior Academic Achievement must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled, such as that identified in Education above. Superior Academic Achievement is based on: (1) Class Standing - Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses; OR (2) Grade-Point Average (G.P.A.) - Applicants must have a grade-point average of either (a) 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on your official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or (b) 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.; OR (3) Honor Society Membership - Applicants may be considered eligible based on membership in one of the approved national scholastic honor societies listed by the Association of College Honor Societies (https://www.achsnatl.org/). I have one year of graduate level education (18 semester hours) that is directly related to the work of the position such as engineering, construction, engineering or industrial technology, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science or mathematics. I have the specialized experience as described in A, but less than one year; and I have at least a bachelor's degree but less than the required one year of graduate level education as described in B. To qualify for the GS-08 grade level, you must have:

A. One year of Specialized experiencewhich includes understanding designs for a variety of engineering features for piers, breakwaters, roads, pavements, bridges, buildings, floodwalls, drainage structures, water retention structures, pumping stations, revetments and dikes; knowledge of CADD systems.
OR
B. I have successfully completed one and a half years of graduate level education (27 semester hours) in an appropriate field of study of engineering, construction, engineering or industrial technology, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science or mathematics. OR
C. I have the specialized experience as described in A, but less than one year; and I have at least a bachelor's degree but less than the required one and half years of graduate level education as described in B. To qualify for the GS-09 grade level, you must have:

One year Specialized experience which includes experience in calculating dredging and cut/fill volumes while utilizing engineering techniques to include arithmetic, geometric, algebraic formulas when performing surveying computations; perform Single/Dual and Multi-beam frequency hydrographic surveys; perform appropriate pre-survey calibration and equipment checks; post-process survey data utilizing Computer Aided Design & Drafting (CAD); conduct topographic surveys; implement quality control standards and perform quality assurance on collected survey data; complete preventative maintenance and repairs on survey equipment.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent.

Must have 52 weeks at the GS-06 for the GS-07 grade level
