Summary

Serve as Principal Investigator for the Gulf Atlantic Coastal Plain Long Term Agroecosystem Research (LTAR) site.
Coordinate development of decision aids, expert systems, and process models resulting from unit research and collaboration.
Lead research on ecosystem services delivered by agricultural landscapes.
Complete research techniques to better resolve subsurface water routing and residence times in soils having confining layers, precision management of water availability thresholds for competing ecosystem services.

Subject to one-year supervisory/managerial probationary period unless prior service is creditable. New USDA supervisors must successfully complete all components of the required training program before the end of their probationary period.

Qualifications
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
Basic Requirements for Hydrology Series, 1315: Degree: physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours in physics. Calculus and physics, as described above, are requirements for all grade levels. OR Combination of education and experience: course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Basic Requirements for Soil Science Series, 0470: Degree: soil science or a closely related discipline that included 30 semester hours or equivalent in biological, physical, or earth science, with a minimum of 15 semester hours in such subjects as soil genesis, pedology, soil chemistry, soil physics, and soil fertility. OR Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in soil science or a related discipline that included at least 30 semester hours in the biological, physical, or earth sciences. At least 15 of these semester hours must have been in the areas specified above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Basic Requirements for Physical Scientist, 1310: Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics. OR
Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In either A or B above, the courses must have included a fundamental course in general physics and, in addition, courses in any two of the following: electricity and magnetism, heat, light, mechanics, modern physics, and sound.
Additional Requirements:
In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below.
GS-14: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-14 level of this position are: conducting and planning research related to processes regulating production and/or non-production ecosystem services delivered by agricultural landscapes; managing research budgets including grants and other soft funds; managing human, physical, and fiscal resources to achieve the research mission; managing individual and team research projects to address research goals and priorities; effectively communicate with government officials, internal and external scientific colleagues, scientific organizations, and industry stakeholders; producing peer review publications on one subjects related to the position.
GS-15: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-15 level of this position are: leading multidisciplinary teams conducting experiments related to processes regulating production and/or nonproduction ecosystem services delivered by agricultural landscapes; using and manipulating complex agronomic, soil science, or engineering related techniques to measure greenhouse emissions; examining the impact of greenhouse gas emissions and devising and testing methods to reduce greenhouse emissions;; and planning and conducting independent complex research and reporting results in peer-reviewed journals related to the position.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
