Summary

As an Information Technology Specialist (SYSADMIN) you will be responsible for supporting the agency's Cybersecurity Modernization Strategy. This includes functions such as installing, configuring, troubleshooting, and maintaining hardware, software, networks, and cybersecurity tools. The incumbent also performs helpdesk and other information technology-related support for Commission staff, and Commission initiatives.

Duties

Help

As an Information Technology Specialist (SYSADMIN) GS-2210-13, your typical work assignments may include the following:

  1. Ensuring the rigorous application of information security/ information assurance policies.
  2. Applying principles, and practices in the delivery of systems administration services.
  3. Maintaining systems configuration and server resources to ensure performance, capacity, availability, serviceability, and recoverability.
  4. Deploying virtual machines into virtual networks in a cloud platform (preferably Azure) and configuring them for optimum cost, performance, and security.
  5. Maintaining baseline system security according to Center for Internet Security (CIS) benchmarks.
  6. Planning and scheduling the installation of new or modified hardware and operating systems and security applications.
  7. Managing accounts, network rights, and access to systems and equipment using Azure Active Directory.
  8. Implementing and maintaining security procedures and tools as directed.
  9. Resolving hardware/software interface and interoperability problems and diagnosing faulty system/server hardware.
  10. Managing the installation and integration of systems fixes, updates, and enhancements.
  11. Diagnosing, evaluating, and resolving hardware, software, and remote access problems.
  12. Conducting analytical reasoning and proactive thinking to prevent future problems or breaches to ensure the availability and functionality of on-premises and cloud-based systems.
  13. Verifying data redundancy and system recovery procedures.
  14. Performing IT systems security, maintenance, helpdesk, customer support, and other IT-operational support duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
In the Information Technology Specialist, GS-2210 occupation you must have Information Technology (IT) related experience demonstrating each of the following competencies:

1. Attention to Detail - Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail.
2. Customer Service - Works with clients and customers to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services.
3. Oral Communication - Expresses information to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information; makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately; and
4. Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.

AND

You must have one year of Specialized Experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service.
Specialized experience at the GS-12 level is:

  • Working experience as a cloud administrator in a Microsoft Azure environment applying cloud computing concepts, analytics, network security methodologies, information security and assurance practices when providing systems administration services.
  • Resolving system installation and hardware/software problems, specifically with Microsoft 365, including Teams, SharePoint Online, OneDrive, and Exchange Online.
  • Identifying and mitigating security vulnerabilities and risks in compliance with cybersecurity and privacy principles, maintaining network and server integrity and availability, and analyzing security deficiencies to prevent future problems or breaches.
  • Collaborating closely with agency staff and leadership to ensure seamless implementation of hardware, software, and security applications as well as other cybersecurity-IT systems administration, network maintenance, helpdesk, and other IT-related support duties.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

There is no positive education requirement for this position, however, applicants with the following certifications are highly desirable:

  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate
  • CompTIA Server+
  • CompTIA Security+
  • CompTIA Network+

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.
