This position requires knowledge of advanced nursing assistant skills and responsibilities to perform specialized nursing care and treatment services for patients, operate specialized equipment and provide clerical support clerical services for the clinic.

ANNOUNCEMENT IS OPEN UNTIL FILLED - Applications will be reviewed starting on April 04, 2023 and every 15 business days thereafter until filled.

  • Responsible for obtaining and recording patient information as assigned per unit policy.
  • Shares in the responsibility of maintenance of clinical records and nursing care plans. Assists in admitting and discharging patients.
  • Shares in the responsibility for reporting observations by observing the patient's condition and reactions, and keeping the nurse in charge informed of condition changes.
  • Assists patient in Activities of Daily Living (ADL). Assists health providers in examination of patients by explaining procedures, positioning, draping and assembling instruments and supplies.
  • Performs general maintenance duties including, arranging and restocking supply cabinets; cleaning and sorting supplies, instruments and equipment. Performs 12 lead EKG and sets up for the cardiac monitoring.

This position has rotating shifts and provides weekend and holiday coverage.

Background Investigation: If you are selected for this vacancy, you must undergo a pre-employment fingerprint check and background investigation. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

Individual Occupational Requirement: (for positions at GS-04 and above): Qualifying specialized experience includes nonprofessional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility, or in such work as that of a home health aid performing duties such as:

  • Providing personal nursing care such as providing pre- and post-operative care.
  • Support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures such as setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus.
  • Caring for mentally ill patients including observing, recording and reporting changes in their behavior and providing reassurance and encouragement.
  • Assisting surgeons and registered nurses in operating room activities, including passing instruments, maintaining sterile conditions and draping and positioning patients.
In addition to the Individual Occupational Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:GS-05: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Performing a range of diagnostic support duties in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility which includes taking and recording vital signs; collecting and labeling specimens; making visual observations of patient's condition; assembling equipment and supplies in preparation for treatment; maintaining patient information and data in electronic health records; and maintaining patient confidentiality in accordance with organizational policies.

Combining Experience and Education: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience are also qualifying. If education is used to meet specialized experience requirements, then such education must include courses directly related to the work of the position.
  • For GS-5 level positions, only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to l year of specialized experience. Determine the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the year of specialized experience required at the GS-5 level. Then determine the applicant's education as a percentage of the education that meets the requirements for GS-5. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for GS-5.

Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).

Per IHS policy (SGM 21-04) IHS selectees to positions located in Federally operated hospitals, health centers, and clinics must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 before entry on duty or have IHS approve a medical or religious exemption.
