Help

This position is located with the 161st Air Refueling Wing in Phoenix, Arizona. The primary purpose of this position is: To perform fire prevention and inspection duties designed to detect and reduce or eliminate fire hazards in a high fire expectancy area. Develops and conducts extensive fire protection and prevention education and training programs.

  • Must possess or be able to obtain secret security clearance within one year of appointment.
  • Must be certified by the DoD Firefighter Certification system as Fire Inspector II (includes Fire Inspector I), Fire Instructor I, Hazmat Awareness, Hazmat Operations, Airport Firefighter (includes Firefighter I, II).
  • Federal Employees? Retirement System? (FERS) Position covered as secondary position under the FERS?s special retirement provisions (5 U.S.C. 8412(d)). OR (cont.)
  • Civil Service Retirement System Position covered as secondary position under the CSRS?s special provisions (5 U.S.C. 8366(c)).
  • May be required to work rotating shifts which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or one 24 hr shift per week. May be subject to recall.
  • May be required to participate in on-scene firefighting duties during emergencies, low-manning periods, or during stand-by hours while on 24 hr shift.
  • Employee must participate in a mandatory physical fitness program.
  • May be required to work the Fire Alarm and Communications Center (FACC).
  • May be required to participate on Hazardous Materials Teams (HAZMAT).
  • Employee is required to use all safety equipment and clothing provided by management.
  • This position requires the employee to work under adverse environmental conditions and falls under the respiratory protection program and hearing conservation program.
  • Position requires the ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth.

Qualifications

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Must have at least 18 months experience, education, or training controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade. Have experience in rescue operations; experience in detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; experience in operation of fire communications equipment; experience in controlling hazardous materials incidents; and developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention.

Your qualifications will be evaluated on the following competencies (knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics):

1. Thorough knowledge of facility layouts (including research and/or industrial complexes) and the location and operation of alarm/suppression control panels, hydrants, utility shutoffs, and suppression systems (including special extinguishing agents and systems).

2. Knowledge of recognized standards covering fire protection and prevention techniques and procedures; agency and installation manuals, rules, and regulations; and federal, state, and local fire protection/prevention ordinances and building codes.

3. Thorough knowledge of the physical configuration of a variety of large or complex aircraft and the operational characteristics of associated systems and mechanisms.

4. Knowledge of the theory of fire propagation and progression and the application of accepted techniques and principles to eliminate/reduce the hazards in a specialized environment where there is a high fire expectancy and potential for severity (equivalent to Degree C or D of Factors 1 and 2 in Part 1 of the standard).

5. Skill and ability to develop and conduct fire prevention training, education, and information programs for a variety of client groups.
