Summary

The mission of this unit is to develop new knowledge that expands understanding of the fundamental processes controlling increased production, improved quality, and enhanced uses of corn, soybeans, wheat, and livestock; and to utilize this knowledge to develop plant lines, animal lines, and management schemes that lead to increased farm profitability and sustainability of the nation's genetic resource base.

Duties

Help
  • Investigate how genome sequences/alleles influence immunological mechanisms in poultry and livestock.
  • Identify host variants associated with disease susceptibility or resistance.
  • Develop poultry and livestock genotypes that provide improved disease resistance traits to viral and/or bacterial pathogens.
  • Test improved alleles in vitro and in vivo where warranted.
  • Model whole-animal phenotypes using in vitro methods.
  • Analyzes, interprets, and disseminates the findings in the form of reports, presentations, and publications in scientific journals.
  • Interact with colleagues and University personnel engaged in gene editing in poultry and swine through appropriate pass-through funding to target candidate genes.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

Management and Biological Sciences Series 0401
Individual Occupational Requirements

  1. Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
or
  1. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Microbiology Series 0403
Individual Occupational Requirements
  1. Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent.
or
  1. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Physiology Series 0413
Individual Occupational Requirements

Degree: in one of the basic animal sciences or physiology; or a related discipline or field of science that included at least 24 semester hours in the basic animal sciences, of which 10 semester hours were in animal physiology.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, applicants must also meet qualification requirements as stated below.

GS-12: Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree directly related to the duties of the position (i.e., animal microbiology, animal virology, animal immunology, molecular biology, animal science, and physiology) OR one-year (52 weeks) of specialized experience (defined below) equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal Service OR a combination of graduate level education and specialized experience.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for this position at the GS-12 level are:

Experience developing and executing research related to virology, microbiology, or physiology; AND
experience publishing in peer-reviewed scientific journals research related to virology, microbiology, or physiology.

GS-13: Applicants must have one-year (52 weeks) of specialized experience (defined below) equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal Service. The specialized experience requirements for this position at the GS-13 level are:

Experience planning and conducting independent and collaborative research in virology, microbiology, or physiology, AND presenting research findings at scientific conferences or academic meetings, either in person or virtually; AND experience publishing in peer-reviewed scientific journals research related to pathogen infectivity.

GS-14: Applicants must have one-year (52 weeks) of specialized experience (defined below) equivalent to at least the GS-13 grade level in the Federal Service. The specialized experience requirements for this position at the GS-14 level are:

Experience organizing or coordinating scientific teams to plan and conduct independent and collaborative research related to virology, microbiology, or physiology; AND serving in positions of leadership within the scientific community (Society leadership, Journal Editor, etc.); AND
working with stakeholders to enhance research efforts or writing grant proposals to expand existing programs; AND primary authorship of publications of considerable interest and value to the field.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To further support your qualifications, it is strongly recommended that you submit a one-page abstract of your MS thesis and/or Ph.D. dissertation. Failure to do so could result in loss of your consideration/referral.
