Duties

As a Scientific Program Specialist, you will:

  • Prepare statistical reports related to the prevalence, trends, and burden of heart, lung, blood and sleep diseases and disorders from national and international data systems, the epidemiology studies in the Branch and the medical literature. These health surveys and vital statistics systems include but are not limited to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, National Hospital Discharge Survey, National Vital Statistics System.
  • Respond to statistical queries from within and outside NHLBI related to heart, lung, blood and sleep diseases and disorders.
  • Prepare data for other publications such as the American Heart Association (AHA) Statistical Update.
  • Independently provide recommendations for modifying or improving statistical reports and information.
  • Work collaboratively with all NHLBI Divisions and Offices to develop new report content relevant to their statistical needs.
  • Serve as a resource on data science methods, approaches, interpretation of results, and opportunities in relation to large, prospective cohort studies.
  • Work collaboratively with BioData Catalyst and NHLBI leadership on identifying source material and prioritizations for NHLBI supported studies targeted for inclusion.
  • Provide effective coordination of information and activities of one or more of the cohort studies supported by the Branch.
  • Participate in planning and implementing workshops, working groups, or other epidemiology research meetings.
  • Track receipt and internal processing of progress reports, advisory committee reports, and scientific advances for the epidemiology studies coordinated through the Branch.
  • Assist in the day to day administrative management of the epidemiology programs coordinated through the Branch.
  • Initiate and prepare reports related to program progress.
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of work products by identifying relevant source materials, and assist other staff by providing resources and reviewing their materials for accuracy and completeness.
  • Participate in a cooperative effort to accomplish the goals of the Branch, Division, and Institute.
  • Keep supervisors and staff informed of administrative and scientific developments.
  • Work effectively with other staff and participates in overall team approach.
  • Cooperate with other Federal and non-Government organizations to coordinate program activities.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
You qualify at the GS-12 level, if you meet the following qualification requirements:
  • You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: performing epidemiology studies to support scientific programs and research on heart, vascular, lung, blood, and sleep diseases and disorders; analyzing data and statistics to interpret results of research studies; and preparing reports, presentations, and other documents to communicate information on research programs or findings.
You qualify at the GS-13 level, if you meet the following qualification requirements:
  • You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: leading and performing epidemiology studies to support scientific programs and research on heart, vascular, lung, blood, and sleep diseases and disorders; analyzing data and statistics to provide interpretations and analyses of results of research studies; presenting reports and other documents to communicate information on research programs or findings; and coordinating scientific and program issues with other staff and organizations.
