Duties

Help
  • Serve as a Museum Specialist working for the Museum Director assisting in registration and physical maintenance of historical artifacts in the museum collections.
  • Prepare historical artifacts for storage, ensuring their proper handling and care.
  • Perform research and reference work to identify artifacts, archival material and art applicable to and of the collections exhibited in the local area.
  • Display or stores historic properties such as photographs, documents, and various objects in accordance with proper conservation procedures.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position has an irregular tour of duty and may require shift work and/or work on rotating shifts to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, and in other situations.

Qualifications

This is an obligated position. An obligated position is one to which an employee has statutory restoration rights or entitlement based on active military service, recovery from a compensable injury, or return rights based on an overseas tour. You will be asked to sign an agreement acknowledging that you are aware of the obligation and willing to be displaced under reduction in force procedures upon the return of the former incumbent.

This position is a TERM position. It is time-limited and may be extended up to a maximum of eight years. This position may be converted to a permanent career or career-conditional appointment without further competition as long as all requirements are met. To be eligible for conversion, the employee must complete at least 2 years of current continuous service under a term appointment in the competitive service AND the employee must have a current performance rating under such term appointment of at least fully successful or equivalent. DoD Components may extend competitive service term appointments made in accordance with the" Modification of Temporary and Term Appointments Within the Department of Defense" memorandum beyond 6 years up to 8 years.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). To qualify for this position you must meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes cataloguing of museum artifacts; performing conservation duties related to museum artifacts; performing research related to museum collections; and addressing questions and inquiries by the public.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

Education
