Duties

Help
  • You will oversee operations of the reference desk and online reference service and assigns projects to team members.
  • You will monitor and report to the team on progress in meeting deadlines for completion of assignments, projects and tasks.
  • You will develop and make workflow procedures and best practices in the areas of reference services.
  • You will serve as the escalation point for service issues and complex reference queries, providing guidance and support to front line librarians and staff.
  • You will train and mentor Reference Team members in pedagogical methods for library instruction.
  • You will provide in-depth reference and research assistance to students, faculty, outside researchers (including high ranking officials), and staff.
  • You will employ innovative use of technology to support reference and instruction.
  • You will promote library services to faculty and students through various methods (such as meeting with faculty, presentations, library orientations) to encourage use of library resources for research and study.
  • You will create and present interactive instruction using electronic and digital media to provide research and database instruction to students and faculty.
  • You will lead the library's bibliographic instruction program by creating and developing customized resource briefs, web based training, subject/research guides, and other teaching materials to instruct MCU students and faculty.
  • You will develop the library's collections by evaluating the collection to select new materials or determine items to withdraw and by providing guidance in this area to Reference Team members.
  • You will develop and implement both new and existing reference services, guide program planning and assessment for both traditional and online reference and instruction services and formulate and implement procedures.
  • You will act as a facilitator and coach in coordinating team initiatives and in consensus building activities among team members.
  • You will maintain current and in-depth knowledge of subject areas and available resources through continuous review of publisher's announcements, library literature, and professional periodicals.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Directing academic and research library operations; ensuring collection development supports research; managing resources, services, facilities and personnel of the library.

Education

Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual:

Applicants must meet the requirements specified in paragraphs A or B below.

A. Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate study in library science in an accredited college or university, in addition to completion of all work required for a bachelor's degree;

or

B. A total of at least 5 years of a combination of college-level education, training, and experience. To qualify on this basis, the applicant must establish conclusively that the education, training, and experience provided a knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and techniques of professional librarianship; a knowledge of literature resources; and the knowledge and abilities essential for providing effective library and information services.
