  • Applies a professional knowledge of archeological principles, theories, concepts, methods, and techniques to perform a variety of complex assignments related to heritage resource management.
  • Assists with ensuring compliance with Section 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
  • Assists with professional reports and studies and reviews reports made by others.
  • Provides recommendations and solutions required to achieve compliance and eliminate resource conflicts.
  • Assists with writing and preparing heritage and paleontological resource input for portions of environmental documents such as environmental assessments and planning documents.

  • This is an excepted service, developmental experience appointment expected to last only 1 year under the BLM Pathways Recent Graduates Program.
  • The BLM will require the selected applicant to complete a Participant Agreement in which it shall document the anticipated start and end dates for this developmental appointment.

Qualifications

To be eligible, an applicant must:

Recent Graduates
A Recent Graduate who has obtained a qualifying associates, bachelors, masters, professional, doctorate, vocational or technical degree or certificate from a qualifying educational institution within the previous 2 years or other applicable period.

Other applicable period may include: (1) Certain veterans precluded from applying within the timeframe described above due to a military service obligation, shall have a full 2-year period of eligibility upon his/her release or discharge from active duty. However, in no event, may the individual's eligibility period extend beyond 6 years from the date on which the individual completed the requirements of an academic course of study; and (2) Applicants who completed their educational program requirements after December 27, 2010 will have a full 2 years of eligibility beginning on the date the final regulations became effective, July 10, 2012.

In order to assess you meet a qualified status for this position and to refer you to the hiring manager, the agency must be able to determine that you meet the qualifications based on completed education, specialized experience, and/or both - please be sure to include this information in your resume. To be creditable, experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade of the position to be filled.

In addition to the positive education requirements, to qualify at the GS-07 level you must meet the following:

Specialized Experience: In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: working with a professional archeologist, planning and carrying out field studies to identify cultural, historic and/or paleontological resources; assisting in recording survey results through field notes, site maps, or photographs; and applying and adapting a wide range of established data analysis methods to fit a variety of circumstances.
-OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have 18 semester hours of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree in directly related field of study.
-OR Superior Academic Achievement (See OPM's General Policies, Application of Qualification Standards Section 4.f.) S.A.A. must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled.
-OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

Physical Demands: Field work routinely requires physical exertion such as long periods of standing or walking over rough, uneven, rocky surfaces or mountainous terrain; recurring bending, crouching, stooping or reaching; using hand tools such as shovels, trowels, or screening devices; and lifting of moderately heavy items such as equipment and samples.

Work Environment: The work regularly involves moderate risks or discomforts which may require special safety precautions, e.g., adverse weather conditions, hazardous driving conditions, irritating or occasionally hazardous chemicals; hostile wildlife; and travel in off-road vehicles. Incumbent will adhere to all safety rules and regulations as prescribed in manuals/supplements or by the designated Safety Officer.

Education

This position has a positive education requirement which requires that you:

1. Have a degree that included: Three semester hours each in the following course areas:

  • History of archeology;
  • Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa;
  • Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development;
  • Theory and methods of archeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques;
  • Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work;
AND

Six semester hours of related course work in:
  • geography, geology, or cultural geography;
  • history, historiography, or historical archeology;
  • environmental studies;
  • scientific writing (nonfiction English composition);
  • surveying;
AND

Archeological field school.

2. Related Curriculum- Degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements listed above (including archeological field school).

B. Combination of Education and Experience- College-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in A above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education.

C. Experience- Four years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project.
