As a ELECTRONIC MEASUREMENT EQUIPMENT MECHANIC (TITLE 32), WG-2602-5/8/11, you will perform calibration, diagnostics repair, and certification of electronic, mechanical, and radiation Test Measurement and Diagnostic Equipment (TMDE).

This is NOT an all-inclusive list:

  • Align, troubleshoot, test, inspect, repair, modify, calibrate and certify precision measurement equipment such as multimeters, microwave equipment, oscilloscopes, temperature analyzers, mercurial barometers, gage blocks and micrometer caliper dimensional equipment, digital voltmeters, signal generators, torque wrenches, pressure gauges, torque testers, weight scales, electronic counters, radiation monitors, radix calibrators, and radiation dosimeters.
  • Calibrate and repair TMDE within support capability and authority including various levels of calibration as designated in technical bulletins, manuals, etc.
  • Operate equipment to complete range checking for proper operation of positioning controls.
  • Follow appropriate safety procedures, with special care being exercised while calibrating high voltage, radio frequency, radioactive sources and high-pressure instruments and gages.
  • Diagnose equipment, make repairs, and replace defective parts/components such as integrated circuits, printed circuit boards, electronic condition coils, radiation detector boards/circuits, crystals, transistors, tubes, transformers, condensers, diodes, relays potentiometers, and related components.
  • Isolate faults by taking measurements and comparisons in voltage, amperage, ohms, henries, power factor, watts, temperature, humidity, microns, foot-pounds, decibels, sensitivity, noise, stability, Voltage Standard Wave Ratio (VSWR), impedance, phase, absolute pressure, time intervals, displacement, flow rate, etc., to determine performance of equipment.
  • If signal is distorted, trace it through electronic stages to locate malfunctioning part.
  • Refer to technical manuals and manufactures specifications to obtain information on operation characteristics of circuit components such as integrated circuits, microprocessors, decoders, latching networks, notch filters, logics, controllers, programmable gain amplifiers, digital displays, transistors, tubes, transformers, coils, relays, motors, and similar devices.
  • Perform functional electronic, physical, and radioactive testing involving interpretation and analysis of measurement data, in accordance with cyclic inspection requirements.
  • Analyze and isolate component malfunctions; calculate and determine tolerances; and perform tests and calibrations in accordance with instructions, which are often vague and incomplete, and may require the preparation of diagrams and instructions to facilitate the calibration action.
  • Set up system test sets and various types of test equipment such as frequency meters, standing wave ratio meters, radio frequency (RF) power meters, function/ arbitrary waveform generator, distortion analyzers, time frequency work stations, oscillators, voltmeters, electronic counters, oscilloscopes, attenuators, decade resistors and capacitors, signal generators, stroboscope, tachometers, pneumatic and hydraulic pressure standards and other physical and electronic tests.
  • Following repair, test by applying signals in known amplitude and wave shape into oscilloscopes to observe wave pattern.

  • This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) of the Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position.
  • May occasionally be required to work other than normal duty hours; overtime may be required.

Qualifications

AREA OF CONSIDERATION: The areas of considerations for this position, Title 32 Excepted Service (32 U.S. Code § 709), will be in the following manner and sequence,

  • The FIRST area of consideration for this position will be all excepted permanent and indefinite temporary technicians within the ILNG.
  • The SECOND area of consideration will be all current Federal Employees.
  • The THIRD area of consideration will be all Federal re-employment eligible.
  • The FOURTH area of consideration will be applicants willing to become T32 Dual Status Technicians and gain ILNG membership.
  • The FIFTH area of consideration will U.S. Citizens.

Military Grades: Enlisted/Warrant Officer - May not exceed rank of CW1

GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Must have experience or training which demonstrates a working knowledge of electronic principles involved in the generation and measurement of such elements as voltage, current, impedance, capacitance, frequency, and inductance; experience in the use of various precision measurement instruments and standards.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: WG-11 Level: Must have 18 months experience or training , 6 months must be at the WG-10 Level, with basic application of operating principles such as the production and utilization of oscillations over a broad range of frequencies; signal and waveform behavior, distortion, and amplification; pulse, trigger, and synchronization techniques; digital/analog processing and data conversion techniques; and a variety of display and indication methods; experience in tracing signals and voltage paths, and skilled in the analysis of waveform characteristics such as timing, duration, frequency, and phasing; originate test set-ups to isolate malfunctions and check performance characteristics of special or unique test panels or mockups; experience in interpreting and applying a variety of technical electronic information such as schematic symbols, mathematical expressions and formulas, calibration procedures, and other reference materials; experience in applying established techniques and methods of repair, testing, alignment, and calibration of equipment, which serves as test equipment or precision measurement standards; experience in utilizing electronic circuits to measure electronic or electrical quantities to determine the performance characteristics and accuracy of other instruments and equipment. WG-08 Level: Must have 12 months experience or training with basic application of operating principles such as the production and utilization of oscillations over a broad range of frequencies; signal and waveform behavior, distortion, and amplification; pulse, trigger, and synchronization techniques; digital/analog processing and data conversion techniques; and a variety of display and indication methods. WG-05 level: Must have 6 months experience or training in performing simple mechanical installations and adjustments; experience demonstrating the ability to recognize obvious malfunctions; experience using common hand tools; experience that demonstrating the ability to follow written instructions.
