Duties:
As a Hydrologist, Water-Quality Specialist, within the Colorado Water Science Center (COWSC), some of your specific duties will include:
Advising the center on technical matters related to discrete and continuous water-quality measurements and data analysis;
Providing quality control for the COWSC water-quality programs and developing water-quality quality-assurance plans, procedures, and documentation;
Serving as a technical resource and liaison between the COWSC and other USGS programs regarding quality assurance and new technologies related to water-quality data-collection methodologies, laboratory methods, data analysis, modeling and data management.
Instructing and advising others with regard to discrete water-quality sampling and laboratory analysis as well as continuous water-quality instrumentation, field methods, and data-processing systems;
Evaluating water-quality related programs and projects with respect to quality assurance of field data-collection activities, records processing, modeling, data analysis, and publishing;
Reviewing of water-quality related project proposals and interpretative reports for technical soundness;
Participating in technical project reviews;
Serving as a senior expert in the field of water quality and personally conducts hydrologic research and investigations related to water quality;
Maintaining current familiarity with technical literature and research within the water-quality discipline;
Leading or participating in hydrologic studies of considerable scope and complexity planning, directing and/or performing comprehensive hydrologic studies;
Operating a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties.

Qualifications
BASICEDUCATIONREQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Hydrologist, all grade levels.
A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics.
B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above which must include at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.
For GS-13:
In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in water-quality hydrology that is equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service.
Examples of such experience include planning, executing and reporting on original water-quality hydrologic studies or ongoing water-quality hydrologic studies requiring a fresh approach to resolve new problems. The complexity of this work typically required extensive modification and adaptation of standard procedures, methods, and techniques, and the development of totally new methods and techniques to address novel or obscure problems for which guidelines or precedents were not substantially applicable. At this level, Hydrologists have extensive knowledge of the principles of hydrology and highly developed ability in their application, and wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform scientific work of marked difficulty and responsibility.
