  • The duties described are for the full-performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity.
  • The duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Performs subsidiary phases of grading and certification work, as required, to obtain the necessary on-the-job training.
  • Examine product to determine adherence with contracts, such as grade, weight, packing and quantity.
  • Applies, or oversees the application of the official grade markings to labels, packaging materials, and other materials identifying the product's quality.
  • Examines several types of poultry and eggs, by applying official standards and regulations.
  • Studies rules, regulations, policies, and procedures governing the grading and certification of poultry and egg products.

  • Complete at least 640 hrs of work experience prior to completion of degree.

  • Must be available to work a regular schedule when classes are in session as well as during scheduled breaks.
  • Selectee will be subject to a pre-employment medical statement and/or exam.
  • Commodity grading work requires periods of physical exertion to lift and move boxes and cartons of product often weighing over 50 pounds.
  • Prolonged periods of standing, walking, stooping, bending, and climbing; physical coordination and finger dexterity in at least one hand for poultry grading assignments and two hands for shell egg assignments to perform digital examinations of eggs.
  • Ability to detect abnormalities in the commodity through normal or corrected vision in at least one eye for distance, depth perception, and color.
  • Ability to assure safety in a highly mechanized noisy environment through adequate or correctable hearing.
  • Ability to determine product qualities through smell.
  • The work environment is in a poultry or shell eggplant and involves moderate discomforts and risks such as the cold temperatures and freezer storage areas, the presence of processing equipment, moving carts and forklifts, and wet slippery floors.
  • Selectee will be required to complete a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to this office acknowledging and accepting that geographic mobility is a condition of employment. Failure to sign the MOU will be grounds for withdrawal of the job offer.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

ELIGIBILITY: Students who are currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment on at least a half-time basis at a qualifying educational institution in a certificate, degree, or diploma program.Applicants can qualify by meeting the EDUCATION requirements specified below.

EDUCATION:

GS-4: Completion of 2 full academic years (60 semester or 90 quarter hours) of post-high school study or an associate's degree.

  • An academic year of undergraduate education is defined as a minimum of 30 semester or 45 quarter hours at an accredited college or university; OR
  • A minimum of 36 weeks at an accredited business, technical, vocational, or qualifying educational institution for at least 20 classroom hours per week.

Upon graduation, you must meet the following education requirement to be eligible for conversion to a position in the - Agricultural Commodity Grading series:1980

Applicants must have successfully completed a 4-year course of study, from an accredited college or university, leading to a bachelor's degree.

Additional information

The anticipated hours are 40 hours per week.

This is a temporary Pathways Internship Program appointment not-to-exceed 1 year and may be extended based on program needs and if the student meets program requirements.

Housing and travel expenses will not be paid.

This Internship confers eligibility for a noncompetitive conversion to a permanent or term position in the competitive service contingent upon meeting all applicable Internship Program requirements and the needs of the agency. You will be considered for conversion to a permanent or term position upon the successful completion of your Internship. However, please note that eligibility for conversion does not guarantee the agency will opt for conversion. The target position for this internship is Agricultural Commodity Grading series:1980

If selected, official transcripts will be required prior to entrance on duty. Proof of enrollment or acceptance for the upcoming academic term or semester will also be required unless graduating in the current semester.

A Pathways Participant Agreement will be required if you are selected for a position. The agreement must be signed by all applicable parties prior to entrance on duty.

Student Interns must continue to meet the Pathways Program requirements throughout the duration of the appointment. Incumbents will be required to provide proof of continued enrollment and good standing each semester or grading period throughout the internship program. Failure to do so will result in termination of the appointment.
