About the Position: Serves as Special Programs Project chemist with responsibility for technical supervision and technical quality of all Special Programs Division (SPD) projects conducted on programs of laboratory, chamber, and large and small scale field testing and operations of novel explosive materials, chemical warfare defense systems, agents, precursor materials, and simulants, and other defense related chemical initiatives.
Summary
About the Position: Serves as Special Programs Project chemist with responsibility for technical supervision and technical quality of all Special Programs Division (SPD) projects conducted on programs of laboratory, chamber, and large and small scale field testing and operations of novel explosive materials, chemical warfare defense systems, agents, precursor materials, and simulants, and other defense related chemical initiatives.
Perform the technical aspects of work to be accomplished in the Project Scientist Management Branch and SPD customer programs.
Evaluate results of technical work in terms of economy, efficiency, and accuracy, and as needed, consults with operations specialists.
Ensure customer?s technical deliverables are met in accordance with applicable standards and regulations.
Responsible for the technical quality of work performed.
Develop the study and refinement of present methods of analysis of novel threat explosive materials, chemical warfare related materials, agents and simulants, other defense related chemical initiatives.
Analyze problems encountered in preceding tests deriving from operational failures and deficiencies.
Provide advice on the technical adequacy of approaches and procedures.
Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Top-Secret security clearance Critical-Sensitive (CS) for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
This position requires to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license.
This position requires to complete a pre-employment physical.
This position requires working some nights and weeks to accommodate testing schedules.
This position requires use of Personal Protective Equipment (Mask, respirator, gloves, suits, lab coat).
This position requires up to 20 % TDY.
This position subject to initial and random drug testing.
This position requires Energetic Material Operator Level III certification within 2 years of appointment.
This position requires Level II certification in acquisition career field of Test and Evaluation within 60 months of entry into the position.

Basic Education Requirement for Chemist - 1320 series:
A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.
OR
B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing laboratory methods of analysis and test/training materials to support test/training and operation projects. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service GS-12 or above.
