Summary

The purpose of this position is to conduct bioanalytical development and validation, analyze pharmacokinetic samples and perform the occasional stability testing for active pharmaceutical ingredients and investigational drug products. The incumbent will be part of a group of chemists who perform assays, provide oversight of the mass spectrometers within the Clinical Pharmacology Lab (CPL) and assure quality control for assays conducted in support of the clinical research activities of the CPL.

Duties

Help
  • Serving as a professional chemist in support of the research activities of the laboratory.
  • Determining what information or methods need to be developed to complete the various testing phases of a project.
  • Keeping abreast of the latest developments in science so that any new advances can be incorporated into research activities and experiments.
  • Developing new methods or modifying existing ones for collecting, analyzing, organizing and recording experimental data appropriate for publication and future reference by others.
  • Recreating experiments describing protocols, methods, and procedures used; summaries of data obtained; and descriptions of any problems or unusual situations encountered in carrying out the experiment.
  • Serving as an expert technical consultant and advisor to scientific and technical personnel inside and outside the agency in a wide ranging arena of chemical subject matters including the field of chemical analysis and physical chemical test methods.
  • Attending various meetings and conferences and presenting technical papers before professional groups.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a Chemist (Analytical), GS-1320 position, you must have completed the requirements for a bachelor's or graduate or higher degree in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics OR a combination of education and experience course work equivalent to a major as shown above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition, in order to qualify for a Chemist position, at the GS-13 level, you must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: planning and developing scientific experiments and projects in support of chemical research; calibrating complex laboratory instruments; overseeing the operations of a chemical laboratory, equipment and personnel; and reviewing and presenting periodic laboratory reports regarding experimental results.
