Duties

Help
  • Works with the research leader and/or other senior staff to develop and implement animal care, nutrition and health programs; animal grazing, housing and transport plans; and animal monitoring, inventory and reporting schedules.
  • Participates as a team member with scientists in the research process and assumes full technical and operational responsibility for specific phases of research programs.
  • Determines the methods and materials needed according to the research needs of the scientists involved.
  • Operates and oversees maintenance of a wide variety of laboratory and agricultural equipment typically associated with livestock research enterprises.
  • As needed, operates a variety of heavy duty on-road and off-road equipment such as tractors, trucks and trailers used to transport livestock to various research sites, snow machines, all-terrain vehicles, etc.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Specialized Experience:
Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-08 which is directly related to the work of this position, and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is developing and implementing livestock (including sheep, horses or cattle) care, nutrition or health programs, grazing, housing and transporting plans, and monitoring inventory schedules; preparing reports summarizing results of research data; providing technical and administrative supervision of staff by assigning and reviewing work, ensuring adequate personnel training, and resolving personnel conflicts.

Education:
Two full years of graduate level education or a master's degree directly related to the position. Related degrees may include animal science, livestock feeding and nutrition, livestock or farm animal management, animal or livestock production.
OR
A combination of graduate level education and specialized experience as described above.

Physical Demands: The work requires some physical exertion, such as regular and recurring running, walking, or bending. In many situations, the duration of the activity (such as most of a work day) and remote locations contribute to the arduous nature of the job. In other situations, there may be special requirements for agility or dexterity, such as exceptional hand/eye coordination and using horses to work livestock, and ability to accomplish goals in inclement weather.

Work Environment: The work involves regular and recurring moderate risks or discomforts that require special safety precautions, e.g., working with contagious diseases or irritant chemicals or working outdoors. The employee is required to use protective clothing such as gowns, coats, boots, goggles, crash helmets, and gloves.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

  • Supervisory Responsibilities: Provides supervision over eight Agricultural Science Research Technicians (GS range 4 to 6). Outlines work assignments, provides guidance on procedures and methods to be used, and reviews work upon completion. Incumbent is responsible for approving or disapproving leave, giving performance evaluations, and making recommendations concerning personnel actions.
