Help

As a Research Geologist within the Earthquake Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Collect, analyze, and interpret geologic data to evaluate the potential for major earthquakes.
  • Develop statistical approaches or mathematical models to resolve problems in paleoseismology, Quaternary geochronology, and tectonic geomorphology relevant to seismic hazards.
  • Develop models of landform evolution used to understand fault deformation and/or shaking effects.
  • Conduct post-earthquake investigations to collect ephemeral field data produced by deformation during large earthquakes.
  • Conduct research to answer questions about earthquake processes which lead to new methods or important changes to existing products.
  • Serves as an incidental driver.
Physical Demands: Work is usually performed in an office setting, laboratory, or field. Field work may involve periods of walking, climbing, bending, or exposure to irritating chemicals and hazards. Rough terrain and extreme weather and temperature may be encountered in the field. Use of personal protective clothing and carrying equipment or samples weighing 15-30 pounds may be required.

Work Environment: Work performed in office or laboratory settings are adequately heated, lighted, and ventilated. Feld work may include exposure to extreme heat or cold, rain or snow, dust or dirt, or encounters with dangerous fauna and flora or other wilderness dangers.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geologist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in geology. In addition to the geology course work included in the degree, it must also have included or been supplemented by 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.

B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in geology plus 20 additional semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.

For GS-13:

In addition to the basic education requirements as stated above, applicants must have one year of specialized research experience in geology or geophysics equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service. Examples of experience may include: serving as an independent researcher conceiving, formulating, and conducting research investigating the recurrence of earthquakes or paleoearthquakes; conducting fault slip studies using field methods, LiDAR, imagery, or geophysical data to investigate active faults and landscape evolution; working with cosmogenic or radiocarbon dating of Quaternary landforms; developing or modifying numerical or statistical codes to study active tectonics. The experience required also includes working closely with State and Federal agencies, universities, non-governmental organizations on earthquake hazards; authoring scientific journal articles, reports, and/or other products; attending scientific and interagency meetings to present research results and exchange information within the scientific community; and working directly and responsibly with scientists of other federal and state agencies and universities on technical issues related to the research assignment. At this level, Geologists have extensive knowledge of the principles of geology and highly developed ability in their application, and wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform scientific work of marked difficulty and responsibility.
