Duties

As a GS-0401-13 Biologist, your duties may include, but are not limited to the following tasks:

  • Serving as a clinical biological researcher, laboratorian, and educator in support of the research and training activities of the department with a specialty in hematology, flow cytometry, molecular genetics, molecular biology, and hematologic disorders including research testing, new translational test development
  • Planning, developing, implementing, and managing all experiments and protocols under study, or leads a team in all activities.
  • Providing leadership for a research team or in the conception and formulation of productive research ideas or approaches.
  • Making decisions as to the time and resources required to perform the experiments and establishes plans and schedules.
  • Evaluating the progress of experiments and analyzing results of experiments to determine whether data generated is accurate and valid.
  • Comparing results with previous related studies to verify data validity and identifying unusual or unexpected results and their probable causes and recommends rerunning experiments or modifying conditions as necessary.
  • Developing new methods for and collects, analyzes, organizes, and records experimental data appropriate for publication and future references by others.

  • If selected, you must pass a pre-employment medical examination, provide evidence of immunization, and be free from communicable diseases.
  • Work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as long periods of standing and walking, bending over instruments and microscopes, and lifting light to moderately heavy items such as reagents packs and various supplies.
  • Work environment involves regular and recurring exposure to infectious agents such as hepatitis and HIV and to noxious and flammable liquids such as xylene and formalin.
  • Biologists are required to use protective clothing such as lab coats, goggles, gloves, and must follow all Universal Safety precautions. Technologists work in a Biohazard Level 2 facility.
  • Incumbents working with radioactive sources such as those found in blood irradiators will be required to complete a background security check to be certified as ?trustworthy and reliable? by Division of Radiation Safety and DPSAC.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENT:
In order to qualify for a Biologist, GS-0401 position, you must have completed the requirements for a bachelor's (or graduate) degree in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position, from an accredited college or university.
OR
Have a combination of experience and education which includes courses comparable to a major in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry or related disciplines appropriate to this position, AND appropriate experience or additional education which demonstrates similarly appropriate skills or abilities needed to perform the duties of this position.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENT:
You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: Serving as a Biologist technical investigator in clinical laboratory including some or all of the following: Hematology, Flow Cytometry, Molecular Genetics, Molecular Biology, Next Generation Sequencing; providing advice and/or training to new and current laboratory staff on the use of sophisticated laboratory equipment and the performance of specialized procedures, assays, and techniques; planning, developing, implementing, and managing all experiments and protocols under study, and developing new methods for and collecting, analyzing, organizing, and records experimental data appropriate for publication and future references by others.

You will receive credit for all experience material to the position, including experience gained in religious, civic, welfare, service, and organizational activities, regardless of whether you received pay.
