Duties

Help
  • Develop precision agriculture techniques and advanced analytic tools for resilient and sustainable cropping systems.
  • Develop state-of-the-art climate-adaptive cropping systems for improved ecosystem services and productivity.
  • Determine linkages between plant available water, evapotranspiration, and crop yields at multiple scales.
  • Evaluate agronomic response and profitability at multiple scales.
  • Assess the long-term impact of cropping systems on soil and water resources.
  • Plan and conduct research to optimize soil nutrient availability and crop nutrient use efficiency.
  • Apply advanced in-field and remote sensing methods and state-of-the-art analysis techniques (e.g., machine learning) in research studies.
  • Collaborate with Unit and other ARS units, universities, public agencies, producers, and industry scientists to achieve CSWQRU objectives.
  • Supervise technical support.
  • Analyze, interpret, and disseminate findings in scientific peer-reviewed journal articles, presentations, and reports.

Qualifications

Minimum qualification requirements are found in the OPM Qualification Standards Operating Manual for General Schedule Positions. Qualification requirements must be identified for each grade level advertised.

Basic Qualification Requirements for Soil Science Series, 0470:

Soil Science Series 0470 (opm.gov)

A. Degree: soil science or a closely related discipline that included 30 semester hours or equivalent in biological, physical, or earth science, with a minimum of 15 semester hours in such subjects as soil genesis, pedology, soil chemistry, soil physics, and soil fertility.

OR

B. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in soil science or a related discipline that included at least 30 semester hours in the biological, physical, or earth sciences. At least 15 of these semester hours must have been in the areas specified in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Basic Qualification Requirements for Agronomy Series, 0471:

Agronomy Series 0471 (opm.gov)

A. Degree: agronomy; or related discipline of science that included at least 30 semester hours of course work in the basic plant sciences, including at least 15 semester hours in agronomic subjects, such as those dealing with plant breeding, crop production, and soil and crop management.

OR

B. Combination of education and experience: at least 30 semester hours in the basic plant sciences, including a minimum of 15 semester hours in agronomic subjects, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Graduate Education: Agronomy, or one of the related disciplines or fields of science, such as plant physiology, soils, or genetics, where the curriculum or pattern of training placed major emphasis on field crops or agronomy. Graduate study in related fields, such as botany, plant pathology, and biochemistry may also be qualifying, provided it placed a sufficient amount of emphasis on agronomy.

Evaluation of Education: Course work in such subjects as botany, plant taxonomy, plant physiology, plant breeding or genetics, plant ecology, plant pathology, microbiology, agronomy, or those dealing with basic soil-water-plant relationships of an agronomic or ecologic nature may be used to meet the 30-semester-hour requirement in the basic plant sciences. Agronomy courses include agronomy, field crops, field crop production or management, soil and crop management, plant breeding and development, weed control, and similar courses, including those in soils, biochemistry, plant physiology, etc., provided they dealt with principles, methods, or procedures that are applied directly in agronomic work and in the solving of agronomic problems.

Additional Requirements:
In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below.

GS-12: Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree directly related to the duties of the position (e.g., soil science, agronomy, crop science, plant science) OR 1 year of specialized experience (defined below) equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal Service OR a combination of graduate level education and specialized experience.

GS-13: Applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience (defined below) equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal Service.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised.

The specialized experience requirements for this position at the GS-12 level are:

- Conducting field research related to the agronomic response of grain cropping systems; AND
- Publishing research results on field crop production systems in peer-reviewed scientific journals; AND
- Presenting research findings at scientific conferences or academic meetings, either in person or virtually.

The specialized experience requirements for this position at the GS-13 level are:

- Planning and conducting independent field research related to the agronomic response of grain cropping systems; AND
- Publishing research results on precision agriculture-based field crop production systems in peer-reviewed scientific journals as primary author; AND
- Presenting research findings at scientific conferences or academic meetings, either in person or virtually; AND
- Leading a research project or team to accomplish objectives related to precision agriculture cropping systems.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Research scientists have open-ended promotion potential. Research accomplishments and their impact on the duties and responsibilities of positions are evaluated periodically. The grade level is limited only by the individual's demonstrated ability to perform research of recognized importance to science and technology. Vacant research positions may be filled at one of several grade levels depending upon the scientific impact of the person selected. For this reason, you are encouraged to apply at all grade levels. A peer review will be required for selections made at grades GS-13 and above and the selectee will be required to submit supplemental materials. *Final grade level may be determined by a peer review panel.
