Duties

Help

  • Installing, modifying, and repairing new and existing high-pressure, medium-pressure and low-pressure piping systems and equipment
  • Select size, type of pipe, related materials and equipment such as supports, hangers according to specifications.
  • Assemble and install piping systems such as ductile iron, PVC, steel, copper, stainless steel and black weld pipe.
  • Connects piping using threaded, soldered, brazed, fused and cemented joints using the proper hand and power tools.
  • Test piping systems for proper pressures by monitoring hydrostatic pump and gauges.
  • Conducts safety and preventive maintenance inspections of utility systems and equipment in accordance with VA regulations and National Codes;
  • Work from building plans, blueprints, and sketches to plan and lay out the routing, placement, pitch, elevation, pressure reduction, expansion, and operation of various piping systems and equipment.
  • Read and understand single line drawings, double line drawings, isometrics, shop fabrication drawings, and mechanical schematics
  • Install and maintain compressors, pumps, AHU's, steam and hot water converters, vacuum systems by following specifications and blueprints.
  • Label and tag existing systems and maintain and update valve chart
  • Install, modify, and repair piping systems by setting up system routes, placing, and cutting route openings.
  • Must have the ability to use shop mathematics and have skill in the use of tools and equipment such as welding machines, horizontal band saw, grinders, metal lathe, pipe threading machine, sewer machine, pipe grooving machine and all electric powered and hand tools associated with the pipefitting and plumbing trades
  • Clean radiators, plaster traps, shop areas, and benches, draining air compressor, cleaning of toilets, lavatories and urinals.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Installations and repairs are made from ladders, scaffolding and platforms and where the systems and equipment worked on are in hard-to reach places. Incumbent is required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequent handles, lifts, carries, and set up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Occasionally lift and carry items that weigh over 50 pounds.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
