Duties

Help

As a Health Science Policy Analyst, your responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Develop reports, position papers, planning documents, briefing materials, and responses to a wide range of inquiries from voluntary health organizations, the Administration, and the Congress
  • Conduct in-depth analyses of significant issues or subject matter areas to guide NIDDK presentations and responses to public policy makers regarding mission-related research and research training
  • Write reports required by Congress on scientific initiatives and advances generated by NIDDK program activities
  • Analyze and monitor developments in several areas of science as they affect NIDDK programs
  • Summarize and interpret the work of investigators and research programs in terms that are understandable to Congressional and other audiences
  • Work closely with other Institute staff in monitoring advances and trends in science; represent NIDDK on trans-NIH and interagency committees and task forces; and maintain liaison with relevant non-Federal components
  • Furnish guidance and assistance regarding science policy issues to institute staff

Qualifications

Basic Qualification

In order to qualify for a Health Science Policy Analyst, GS-0601, position you must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree or graduate/higher level degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. (This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained).

Additional Qualification Requirements

To qualify for the Health Science Policy Analyst, 0601 at the GS-12 level, you must: You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal Government obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: analyzing issues associated with advances and scientific opportunities in biomedical research programs, including the impact of the research on public health; analyzing biomedical research-related science policies; conducting strategic planning activities associated with biomedical research programs; interpreting and writing content summarizing biomedical research; AND preparing responses to inquiries from a wide range of audiences.

To qualify for the Health Science Policy Analyst at the GS-13 level, you must: You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in the Federal Government obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: interpreting and advising on the impact of current and proposed health science policies on biomedical research programs; analyzing and reporting on advances and scientific opportunities, including the impact of biomedical research programs on public health; identifying problems of biomedical research programs and initiatives, and proposing potential solutions; AND analyzing biomedical research program data to draw conclusions, develop summary reports, and present recommendations to senior scientific staff.
