Duties

Help
  • Identify and catalogue North American prehistoric artifacts.
  • Accession and de-accession museum objects
  • Apply knowledge of North American native cultures.
  • Provide Access to Collections
  • Observe best management practices in museum techniques.
  • Prevent deterioration of museum objects.
  • Package and handle museum objects.
  • Prepare museum documents.

Qualifications

Individual Occupational Requirement:
Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-5 and above): Experience related to the operation or management of a museum or similar collection of valuable objects. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include collections management, registration, cataloging, research, preservation, restoration, or conservation of collections of museum material, or other experience related to the position to be filled. Most positions require a particular subject-matter specialization, e.g., aeronautics, anthropology, art, geology, history, natural science, technology, biology, or zoology.

EDUCATION:For positions at GS-4 and above, related course work is required. Related fields of study include art, history, museum studies, scientific subjects, or other courses related to the position to be filled.

Specialized Experience:
In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements - please be sure to include this information in your resume. No assumptions will be made about your experience.

For GS-07: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: experience with the basic knowledge of curatorial principles; entering data in curatorial databases; and cataloging archeological objects.

Education: 1 full academic year of related graduate level education. Related fields of study include art, history, museum studies, scientific subjects, or other courses related to the position to be filled. -OR- Superior Academic Achievement (See OPM's General Policies, Application of Qualification Standards Section 4.f.) S.A.A. must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled.

Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

For GS-09: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples:experience with the basic knowledge of curatorial principles, concepts, methods, and techniques; entering and manipulating data in curatorial databases; cataloging archeological objects; and verifying and maintaining the accuracy of collections management files and records.

Education: 2 full academic years of progressively higher-level graduate education or master's or equivalent graduate degree related to the position. Related fields of study include art, history, museum studies, scientific subjects, or other courses related to the position to be filled.

Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.

Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level.
