Duties

  • Incumbent serves as the Supervisory Security Specialist (Chief of Police), and is the official responsible for the planning, direction, and management of the NIH's security, personnel protection, law enforcement, crime prevention, and investigations.
  • Evaluates the spectrum of threats against NIH facilities and personnel while not impeding or interfering with the conduct of mission-critical biomedical research.
  • Incumbent is responsible for the coordination of all the security, protection, surveillance, and communications systems across all NIH facilities.
  • Incumbent directs the development, implementation, administration, and evaluation of integrated and highly complex security operations, law enforcement, crime prevention and intelligence programs to protect NIH facilities and personnel.
  • Incumbent is responsible for collaborating/planning/conducting/and coordinating emergency response protocols; investigations of criminal and other offenses; and plans and conducts community policing services.
  • Plans, develops, organizes, and directs all administrative and operational facets of the NIH Police force.
  • Directs the investigation of crimes and deploys personnel to assist the United States Magistrate in subsequent court cases.
  • Serves as the leading NIH Police authority in the science of traffic management.
  • Provides leadership, supervision, and oversight to a staff of approximately 120 employees and 600 security contractors.

  • The selectee may be required to use protective clothing. The selectee will be required to wear a uniform.

  • This position is subject to the Lautenberg Amendment Gun Control Act of 1968, as amended, which prohibits access to firearms by people convicted of crimes involving domestic violence or any felonious act.
  • You must have reached your 21st birthday prior to an initial Federal Police Officer appointment.
  • If selected for this position, you will be expected to travel 12 weeks for initial entrance level training at Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC). FLETC may be waived for eligible candidates.
  • Selectee will be required to obtain and maintain a CPR and First Aid Certification.
  • Must be able to lift and or move heavy items weighing a minimum of 50 lbs.

In order to qualify for a Police of Chief, GS-0080 position at the GS-15 level, you must have:

You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: managing, supervising, and directing a civilian police operations; providing strategic advice to senior-level officials on a wide range of complex law enforcement and crime prevention procedures and operational analysis of physical security measures that reduce vulnerabilities to the agency; analyzing investigative reports for the specifics of the incident and to identity long-range implications for future prevention; evaluating Police training needs and requirements based on assessment of current threats, issues in law enforcement, security, and legal precedence; formulating operating policies for the planning, managing, and overseeing of programs and services including providing comprehensive security, police protection, and law enforcement for an organization.
