Duties

Help

This position is in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York. The successful applicant will join a Press Office team that is the public information arm for an office of federal prosecutors and civil lawyers engaged in a wide range of sophisticated federal criminal and civil casework, including public corruption, terrorism, violent crime, financial fraud, and civil rights. As a Public Affairs Specialist in the United States Attorney's Office (USAO) for the Southern District of New York your duties include but are not limited to:

  • Establishing and maintaining existing professional working relationships with members of the local, regional, and national print and broadcast media representatives and specialized groups interested in United States Attorney's Office activities.
  • Establishing and maintaining contacts with Federal, state, and local law enforcement organizations and agencies, civil rights groups, and other community interest groups.
  • Organizing and coordinating news media interviews and press conferences for the United States Attorney's Office, including media events involving multi-agency case announcements.
  • Developing and writing material to provide to the news media and law enforcement community, such as press releases, feature stories, background information, data compilations, biographical material, and articles on office program commitments and priorities.
  • Responding to information requests, in written and oral form, from news media, and specialized and general public inquiries on significant United States Attorney's Office matters.
  • Maintaining an updated Internet site and manage the District's Social Media Accounts (i.e., Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.).
  • Providing advice and guidance to the United States Attorney and other management officials on potential media and public reaction to information disseminated.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

The starting salary for a GS-11 is $76,961-$100,044; for a GS-12 is $92,245-$119,922; for a GS-13 is $109,690-$142,595. GS employees are usually hired at step one (1) of the applicable GS grade level at which the applicant qualifies.

Qualifications

To be eligible at the GS-11 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions, as defined below: Specialized Experience, Education, or a Combination of Specialized Experience and Education.

GS-11 Specialized Experience: You must have at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the work at the GS-9 level in the Federal sector. Specialized experience is defined as arranging press conferences with representatives of local media; developing news releases, briefing news media representatives, and preparing written material for dissemination, e.g. press releases, website content, newsletters, speeches; establishing and maintaining working relationships with the general public, government entities, or, community organizations; and, publishing developed content on social media platforms and websites.
Education: One of the following types of education in a related field (e.g., Communications, Journalism): a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or three full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree, or LL.M, if related. Education at the graduate level must be in an accredited college or university and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position.
Combination of Experience and Education: Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. In order to qualify based on a combination of education and experience, graduate education must be in excess of two full years.

GS-12 Specialized Experience: You must have at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the work at the GS-11 level in the Federal sector. Specialized experience is defined as designing, planning, and directing the public affairs program in an agency or organization; arranging press conferences with representatives of local and regional media; developing news releases, briefing news media representatives, and preparing written material for dissemination, e.g. press releases, website content, newsletters, speeches; establishing and maintaining working relationships with the general public, government entities, or, community organizations; and, publishing developed content on social media platforms and websites.

GS-13 Specialized Experience: You must have at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the work at the GS-12 level in federal service. Specialized experience is defined as planning, initiating, and implementing comprehensive public affairs campaigns to enhance the understanding of legal initiatives among the general public and specialized groups and organizations; responding to information requests from local, regional and national news media on significant legal program initiatives; planning, designing and executing comprehensive news media conferences, opportunities or campaigns to convey information concerning legal matters to local, regional and national audiences news media; utilizing social media and traditional news media platforms to promote organizational goals; and, responding to complex inquiries from local and national media sources, broadcast, internet etc. on behalf of a legal office or organization.

Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
