Duties

Help
  • With supervision, performs tasks that are developmental and recurring in nature that require application of basic occupational field theory and principles in the technical area of legal services.
  • With supervision, conducts investigations to obtain evidentiary data and recommend an agency course of action.
  • With guidance, Drafts, negotiates, or examines contracts or other legal documents required by the agency's activities.
  • Edits and prepares for publication statutes enacted by Congress and opinions or decisions of a court, commission, or board.
  • Drafts and reviews decisions for consideration and adoption by agency officials Works closely with senior attorneys.
  • Assists in the performance of legal research, analysis of legal decisions, opinions, rulings, memoranda, and other legal decisions, prepares/writes digests of points of law involved.

  • You must be a student currently enrolled in an accredited college or university
  • Accepted for enrollment or enrolled in an approved program
  • Enrollment must be at least half-time course load as defined by the education institution (typically six hours or equivalent for undergraduate and three hours or equivalent for graduate)
  • Meet the qualification standards of the position
  • May be required to travel by military and/or civilian aircraft in the performance of official duties
  • This position is established under the provisions of the Pathways Program
  • Must be able to obtain appropriate clearance/non-sensitive
  • Have a good academic standing (no less than 2.5 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 grading scale)
  • Completed two academic years of law school by the state of their summer internship
  • Salary will be adjusted in locality depending on the location you are selected for

QUALIFICATIONS: All applicants must have completed at least 2 academic years of graduate level education (e.g. law school) recognized by the American Bar Association Approved Law or a Master's degree or equivalent graduate degree by the start of their summer internship. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcript.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

  1. Knowledge and understanding of diverse legal issues.
  2. Ability to communicate legal issues and principles effectively orally and in writing.
  3. Skill in conducting thorough legal research on a variety of issues.
  4. Skill in properly analyzing facts and legal questions.
  5. Skill in conducting a proper legal investigation to obtain facts.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program.
