Duties

Help
  • Oversees maintenance of engineering records, structure history database, files, and project drawings.
  • Conducts detailed inspections of river training structures for various District Missouri River projects.
  • Inspects river training structures on a regular basis to identify deficient structures, degree of deficiency, and to assess overall condition of structures.
  • Makes site visits while river structure repair work is in progress to finalize list of structures to be repaired or modified based on river stage and survey layout.
  • Prepares or oversees others in the preparation of plans, specifications, and cost estimates for structure maintenance and structure modification work along the Missouri River Navigation Project.

  • Appointment to this position is subject to a two year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 25% of the time.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • Operates an automobile/GVW 4000 lbs., pickup/GVW 5100 lbs., four-wheel drive/GVW 7100 lbs., to accomplish assigned duties.
  • Must obtain and maintain motorboat operators certification through the Corps of Engineers within one year of employment in this position.
  • Employee must be physically able to operate the motor vessel or motorboat without danger to self or to others. Operates Class I motorboat on rivers and lakes.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Minimum Qualification for GS-10:
To qualify, applicants must have one year of specialized experience which includes: experience conducting hydrographic surveys and other data collection activities; AND maintaining functional knowledge of software such as: Hypack, GIS, Windows, Excel, Word, and hardware such as: GPS, sounders, ADCP, and side scan sonar. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service GS-09.

Minimum Qualification for GS-11:
To qualify, applicants must have one year of specialized experience which includes: experience performing maintenance and inspection of flood control structures, such as levees, water control structures, etc.; AND conferring with professional engineers to coordinate work planning and exchange of data on river structures. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service GS-10.

This is a developmental position. The duties of this position lead to the full performance level of GS-0802-11. Incumbent may be appointed to either the GS-10 or GS-11 (depending on qualifications). If selected at the GS-10, the incumbent may be non-competitively promoted to the target level of the position upon: meeting all regulatory requirements; certification by the supervisor of successful performance; completion of all training requirements; and the availability of work at the next higher grade level. Promotion is not automatic.

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
