Summary
About the Position: Serves as a Park Ranger as part of a multi-disciplinary team at the J. Strom Thurmond Dam and Lake, the largest Corps water resources development project constructed east of the Mississippi, that includes among authorized purposes, a mission to manage and conserve park and natural resources, consistent with ecosystem principles, while providing quality sustainable public outdoor recreation experiences.
Performs a wide variety of assignments involving all aspects of park operations including Recreation, Contract Administration, Environmental Stewardship, Environmental Compliance, Visitor Assistance and Services, and Interpretation.
Participates in the conservation, preservation, restoration and use of project natural and cultural resources by managing programs that can include campground management, user fee collections, water safety outreach, and volunteer management.
Patrols project lands and waters to prevent unauthorized use, trespass, destruction of property, and to insure compliance with rules and regulations, and protection of project land, water, facilities and other environmental resources.
Provides project information to local, state and federal agencies and the visiting public through brochures, displays, news releases, websites, and other written and oral correspondence.
A trial or probationary period may be required in accordance with agency policy.
A post-secondary student appointment expires 120 days after completion of the designated academic course of study, unless the student is selected for noncompetitive conversion.
Post-secondary students being converted to positions covered under Administrative Careers with America (ACWA) must be assessed prior to non-competitive conversion.

Education: Four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with twenty-four semester hours of related course work in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 120. Add the two percentages.
GS-07 Grade Level:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes conducting public relations services for the general public and for special groups. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

Education: One full year of graduate level education with major study in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.

Superior Academic Achievement: Successful completion of all the requirements for a bachelor's degree with Superior Academic Achievement. In order to be creditable under this provision, Superior Academic Achievement must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled, such as that identified in Education above. Superior Academic Achievement is based on:(1) Class Standing - Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses; OR(2) Grade-Point Average (G.P.A.) - Applicants must have a grade-point average of either (a) 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on your official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or (b) 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.; OR(3) Honor Society Membership - Applicants may be considered eligible based on membership in one of the approved national scholastic honor societies listed by the Association of College Honor Societies (https://www.achsnatl.org/).
