Duties include, but may not be limited to the following:

  • Provide reference assistance to diverse audience including staff, researchers, patients and their families; assisting them with a broad range and complexity of reference questions.
  • Develop targeted training materials and markets resource availability to all users and promote use.
  • Participate in local, state, regional and national information networks, fostering good working relationships with other health care information professionals.
  • Participate in library orientation and e-resource demonstrations to new employees and patrons.
  • Resolve problems with authentication, access, broken links, etc.
  • Provide technical support and troubleshoot with patrons, individual publishers or the journal subscription agent (e g. password usage, access issues, downloading articles, equipment problems, etc.).
  • Assist with serials control, claiming, accurate record of titles, title changes; maintain library print journal holdings.
  • Assist with collection control, access and maintenance of the library's online, print, audiovisual and microfilm collections.
  • Provide support, participate on committees and monthly hotline call, etc.
  • Collaborate on coordinating the selection, organization and presentation of new or updated packages of electronic databases, journals or books.
  • Assist/educate library patrons in the use of hardcopy and online resources (journals, books, databases).
  • Coordinate and conduct tracking efforts and inform staff of ongoing electronic resource issues.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENTS: All Librarians must meet the requirements for professional education in library science or possess equivalent experience and education as follows: To qualify for this position, you must meet the Basic Requirements as well as the additional qualification requirements.

Basic Requirement Education: (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED) - Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate study in library science in an accredited college or university, in addition to completion of all work required for a bachelor's degree.

OR

Basic Requirement Combination of Education and Experience: (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED) - Possession of a total of at least 5 years of a combination of college-level education, training, and experience. To qualify on this basis, the applicant must establish conclusively that the education, training, and experience provided a knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and techniques of professional librarianship; a knowledge of literature resources; and the knowledge and abilities essential for providing effective library and information services.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: In addition to meeting the Basic Requirement above, you must also meet one of the following additional education and experience requirements for this Librarian position at the GS-9.

Experience: You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-7) in the Federal Service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Librarian. Specialized experience must have demonstrated the ability to perform, supervise, or direct one or more of the functional areas of work covered by this series; to understand the concepts, theories, new developments, and co-relationship of information in related fields; and to maintain up-to-date information on the state of the art. Additional experience includes providing reference assistance; providing technical support and troubleshooting; maintaining library print journal holdings; providing support and participating on committees; assisting/educating library patrons in the use of hardcopy and online resources; and coordinating and conducting tracking efforts.

Education: Successful completion of two (2) full years of progressively higher-level graduate education or master's in library science or equivalent graduate degree, e.g., LL.B. or J.D., related to this position as a Librarian. Combination: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed progressively higher-level graduate education and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. In addition to meeting the Basic Requirement above, you must also meet one of the following additional education and experience requirements for this Librarian position at the GS-11.

Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary and includes no special physical demands. It may involve some walking, standing, bending or carrying of moderately heavy items.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
