This position is located in the Nutrition and Food Service of a Veteran Affairs Medical Center. Nutrition and Food Services is responsible for providing meals and nutritional care to Veteran patients at the Medical Center.
Primary duties include, but are not limited to:
1. Sets up work station with correct supplies/food items, prepares cold food items, assembles meal trays accurately IAW meal ticket and diet restrictions, follows Food Code and HACCP principles, and performs duties of WG-2 as needed.
2. Performs heavy-duty cleaning tasks IAW safety and sanitation instructions.

Physical Requirements: Wage Grade 3 Food Service Workers perform work requiring light to moderate physical effort. They may be required to perform heavy work, such as scouring and scrubbing large size cooking utensils and pushing heavy carts and trucks in unloading, storing, and delivering supplies. They are subject to continuous standing and walking, and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending. May be required to work on ladders and use powered cleaning equipment. They frequently lift or move objects weighing up to 20 pounds unassisted and occasionally lift or move objects weighing more than 40 pounds with the assistance of others.
WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is performed, in a hospital kitchen, where the steam and heat from cooking and dishwashing equipment often cause high temperatures and humidity. The work area can be noisy from food service activities and there is a danger of slipping on floors where food or beverages have been dropped. Food Service Workers are regularly exposed to hot liquids, sharp cutting blades, hot work surfaces and extreme temperature changes when entering walk in refrigerators or freezer units. Subject to prolonged periods of standing. Must abide by personal hygiene standards and safe work procedures such as wearing a hairnet or hat, beard/mustache guard, if needed, and a clean uniform daily. This position involves shift work and requires duty on weekends and holidays. Incumbent may be exposed to contagious diseases while working in a hospital setting.

Qualifications

Duties include but are not limited to: performing food preparation duties in a healthcare facility, hotel, college cafeteria, military base, or similar quantity food service institution; serving correct portion sizes; setting up stations on a tray line; delivering and collecting trays; cleaning and sanitizing kitchen equipment required in quantity food preparation and service; knowledge of regular and modified diets; read and understand diet cards, understand food terminology, measurements and serving information in standardized recipes for all menus.
