Duties

Help

Coordinates, monitors, and schedules the operation of the entire water management system. Utilizing a central computer and a local weather station to manage and operate the cemetery irrigation systems. Formulates overall irrigation strategies to irrigate turf, trees and shrubs in a manner which assures healthy growth while ensuring water and electrical resources are not wasted. Through an effective water audit program integrates soil, vegetation, and atmospheric moisture to calculate efficient watering schedule, and be able to calculate reservoir capacity, spillway, and outlet discharge rates. Monitors and documents the actual performance of the system, adjusting when and where required.

Formulates the overall water management and irrigation strategies, ensuring that all state and local requirements are met. Schedules must balance water and energy usage with resource conservation concerns as well as state and local regulations. Recommends the elements of irrigation system and repair that can most effectively and economically be performed by outside contractors using cost comparison and marker research expertise.

Requires a complete understanding of system capabilities and limitations. Coordination can be very complex as the needs of all cemetery operations must be met not limited to scheduling of irrigation to allow for repairs, system maintenance, burials, ceremonies, mowing/trimming, installation of monuments, herbicide/fertilizer applications, over-seeding/sod operations, turf renovation and customer visitation.

Work Schedule: May be required to work Monday through Friday to include occasional weekends. Due to the mission of the National Cemetery, the cemetery cannot be closed for more than 2 consecutive days at any given time. Additionally, when a Federal holiday falls on a Monday or Friday, staff may be required to work on that holiday or a Saturday. All staff is required to work Memorial Day each year. Staff will be required to work overtime, weekends and holidays when necessary to meet the needs of the cemetery. Occasionally staff may be called back to the facility to perform emergency overtime work.

Physical Requirements: The work requires frequent walking, standing, pushing, lifting, bending, and stooping. Frequent arm and leg movements are required in operation of motorized vehicles and equipment. Occasionally lifts items weighing SO pounds or more when loading and unloading supplies and equipment.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in all types of weather ranging from extreme heat to extreme cold, windy, and rainy
weather conditions, both inside and outside. Incumbent is subject to discomfort when working in unnatural positions for longer periods in all types of weather. Must work under stress and strain in dust, dirt, mud, and water. Incumbent may be exposed to occupational injuries, such as cuts, scrapes, bruises, shock, and dust from sawing materials, as well as other potential hazards working with machinery, saws, and electrical test equipment while performing duties in this position.

Your background must demonstrate work involved in the full range of building and maintenance trades to include carpentry, plumbing, electrical, masonry, pest control, asphalt repairs, etc. This includes repair and preventive maintenance of irrigation systems, maintaining and repairing buildings and physical structures, facilities, and utilities using hand and power tools.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
