Duties

Help

The incumbent serves as a Naval Architecture Technician, and as such develops detailed design and arrangements for new designs and existing ship modifications.
 
Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team.  Typical work assignments include:
 
 

- Using CAD (2D and 3D) and manual drafting skills and engineering knowledge to prepare preliminary layouts and sketches for development of new structural, compartment, equipment or systems arrangements, as well as create new and modify existing engineering drawings including detailed contract drawings; 

- Specifying system components and prepares draft contract specifications. This work has a very high degree of technical complexity and requires a thorough understanding of diversified technical disciplines;

- Independently trouble-shooting in the field and makes on site corrective actions;

- Reviewing contractor's drawings and calculations, submitted for Coast Guard approval, for conformance to contract specification;


- Working in a shipyard and/or on board ships or boats, performing ship checks and site visits, independently and as a team member, to gather information for the preparation of reports, detailed construction drawings and work instructions;

- Assisting in executing design or other projects as directed.  These projects may be executed in a matrix organization that includes the other Surface Forces Logistics Center (SFLC) Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Branch Sections, SFLC Product Lines, Coast Guard YARD, and the Headquarters Ship Design Team;

- Developing and maintaining project data such as cost and schedule data, technical reports, drawings, bills of materials, and test memorandum;

- Analyzing data and identifying problems and proposing remedial actions.

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement. This includes Time-In-Grade requirements for current status employees applying through merit promotion procedures. Status applicants applying for a promotion must have 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade.

Qualifications

GS-12 level:  Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level.

Examples of specialized experience would be to perform detailed designs, and participate in design tradeoff studies,. Examples of occupations that could provide specialized experience include: draftsperson, surveying technician, construction estimator, physical science technician, or mathematical technician. In addition, experience in a trade or craft may be credited as specialized experience when the work provided intensive knowledge of engineering principles, techniques, methods, and precedents. Examples are trade positions with substantial developmental, test, or design responsibilities such as: planner estimators who analyzed designs for production purposes; or instrument or model makers who perform design or development work on devices fabricated.

National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    4. Proficiency in computer-aided design hardware and software (AutoCAD).
