Summary

Help

The incumbent is employed as a Fee Basis Physical Therapist with the South Texas Veterans Heath Care System (STVHCS) and is assigned to the Polytrauma Service in San Antonio, Texas. The incumbent is responsible for evaluating patients, setting goals, planning treatments, and treating patients according to physicians orders in the Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center (PRC) within the STVHCS. The employee may be required to provide other Physical Therapy care throughout the polytrauma system of care as directed by the therapy supervisor. He/she can plan an individualized course of treatment and provides a full range of comprehensive treatment procedures designed to improve or restore function through the use of physical modalities, therapeutic exercise, prostheses, assistive devices and/or any other modality within the scope of physical therapy outlined by the American Physical Therapy Association.

Incumbent treats Polytrauma patients and is assigned to the Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center.
Evaluates complex patients with multiple comorbidities to determine functional impairments,
Identifies problems and needs for individualized therapy treatment.
Ensures special evaluation techniques are demonstrated in balance, neurological facilitation techniques and reflex/spasticity testing.
Evaluates patients, sets goals, plans treatments, and treats patients according to physician orders.
Serves as a consultant for health care providers regarding the delivery of physical therapy services.
Demonstrates knowledge and skill in a range of specialized physical therapy interventions.
Uses unusual motivational techniques to obtain participation with patients complex physical/psychological diagnoses.
Completes physical therapy documentation.

This Fee Basis (per diem) position has an intermittent work schedule, meaning it requires you to come in to perform physical therapy services on an as-needed/unscheduled basis. This position is not full-time or part-time and there is no guarantee of how many hours you may work. This position does not allow for any benefits or leave accrual. Fee Basis appointments are reviewed each fiscal year for a determination of need for continued services and an extension of the appointment. Temporary appointments may be terminated at any time based on needs of service.


Rates are as follows:
Evaluation Rate: 90 minutes $100.00
30 minute treatment session $ 30.00
45 minute treatment session $ 45.00
60 minute treatment session $ 60.00
Work Schedule: Intermittent when needed/Saturdays

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Physical Requirements. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
  • Education and experience: The individual must meet at least one of the requirements below:
  • (1) Bachelor's degree in Physical Therapy AND five (5) years of progressively independent experience as a physical therapist.
  • (2) Master's degree in Physical Therapy AND two (2) years of progressively independent experience as a physical therapist.
  • (3) Doctorate degree in physical therapy.
    • NOTE: Individuals must be a graduate of a Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) accredited college or university. The CAPTE is the only accreditation agency recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) to accredit entry-level physical therapy programs.
  • Foreign Graduates: Graduates of foreign physical therapy programs meet the requirements in subparagraph 3b if they have a full unrestricted and current license to practice physical therapy in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Licensure: Individuals hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice physical therapy in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • English Language Proficiency: Individuals appointed under authority of 38 U.S.C. chapters 73 or 74, to serve in a direct patient-care capacity in VHA must be proficient in written and spoken English. See Chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Preferred Experience:
  • 1+ years inpatient rehab experience
  • 1+ years of experience working with strokes/TBI diagnosis
Physical Requirements: The Physical Therapist position will require heavy lifting (45 pounds or over); light carrying (under 15 lbs); straight pulling (half hour); pushing (half hour); reaching above shoulders; use of fingers; both hands required; walking/standing (half hour); crawling/kneeling (half hour) repeated bending (1 hour); climbing, legs only (half hour); climbing, use of legs and arms; operation of crane, truck, tractor, or motor vehicle; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; specific visual requirement (Corrective lenses okay); both eyes required; depth perception; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing (aid permitted); mental & emotional stability.
