Duties listed are at the full performance GS-09 level.
Plans technical cadastral surveying projects, including preparing and coordinating preliminary project plans, specifications, and estimates for proposed projects.
Examines previous survey reports, and researches legal and historical records.
Maintains, calibrates, and adjusts instruments and equipment used to carry out survey project activities.
Carries out technical land surveying project activities. Selects the most efficient survey approach from among the various alternatives, resolving concerns that arise in the course of the planned work activity.
Takes measurements and collects, organizes, and summarizes data.
Prepares a variety of reports, drawings, and survey plats for completed projects.
Exercises seasoned judgment, resourcefulness, and a comprehensive practical knowledge of land surveying to locate and identify property lines, property corners, survey monuments, etc.

Specialized Experience Requirement:
GS-05: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 grade level. Specialized experience is defined as one or more of the following: Collecting survey data using land survey instruments such as theodolites, total stations or global position systems; and/or Recording and/or measuring areas through use of manual and electronic recording and/or measuring devices; and/or Determining approximate locations to be mapped; and/or Applying skill in sketching, and composing brief notes to complete assignments.
-OR- A bachelor's degree or four (4) years of successfully completed education above high school (120 semester/180 quarter hours) with major study in an appropriate field of surveying, engineering, construction, or industrial technology, or that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as surveying, engineering, industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, forestry, geography, navigation, cartography, physical science, or mathematics.
-OR- An appropriate combination of successfully completed post-high school education (in excess of the first 60 semester/90 quarter hours) and experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.
GS-06: Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 level. Specialized experience is defined as two or more of the following: Conducting simple traverse surveys using land survey instruments; and/or Using transit, theodolites, electronic distance measuring systems, and/or other instruments in the establishment of rights-of-way and land lines; and/or Recording data and making sketches of topography and other physical features; and/or Applying knowledge of the methods, techniques, principles, and/or terminology of surveying to complete assignments.
-OR- One full year (18 semester/27 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level coursework that is directly related to the work of the position. Examples of related fields include: surveying, engineering, construction, or industrial technology;
-OR- An appropriate combination of graduate level education that is directly related to the position and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.
GS-07: Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 level. Specialized experience is defined as two or more of the following: Operating and maintaining a variety of manual and electronic devices such as transits, theodolites, levels, distance measuring and positioning equipment, total stations or global position systems, or other instruments used on land surveys; and/or Independently measuring uncomplicated land surveys and resolving technical problems; and/or Compiling topographic maps, survey plats, and related information using appropriate equipment and techniques; and/or Applying knowledge of technical methods and procedures related to surveying to plan, schedule, organize, and execute limited projects.
