Duties

Help
  • Collects, prepares, evaluates and verifies samples and supporting records.
  • Actively participates in one or more phases of the research process by performing a variety of complex technical duties, in a laboratory, field, or greenhouse environment.
  • Performs the full range of techniques and studies using a variety of specialized equipment.
  • Searches for literature pertinent to research for new procedures or techniques to use in the laboratory, field, or greenhouse.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled and that provided the candidate with the knowledge, skills, & abilities to perform the duties of this position.

GS-07:
Qualifying experience for the GS-07 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-06 grade level or its non-federal equivalent assisting with an experiment or research project related to microbiology, plant microbiology, plant pathology or microbial molecular biology; analyzing DNA; maintaining records of scientific data; and operating or maintaining scientific equipment.
OR
Education: One full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees may include: Plant Pathology, Plant Microbiology, Microbiology, or Microbial Molecular Biology.
OR
A combination of specialized experience and graduate level education as described above.

GS-08:
Qualifying experience
for GS-08 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 grade level or its non-federal equivalentcollecting or evaluating microbiological or plant samples to recover bacteria and analyze them; analyzing DNA; recording or analyzing microbial and plant scientific data; recovering and analyzing nucleic acids and operating and maintaining scientific equipment.
OR
Education:
Two full years of graduate level education or a Master's degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees may include: Plant Pathology, Plant Microbiology, Microbiology, or Microbial Molecular Biology.
OR
A combination of specialized experience and graduate level education as described above.

GS-09:
Qualifying experience for GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-08 grade level or its non-federal equivalent conducting research projects related to collecting or evaluating microbial or plant samples to recover bacteria and analyze them; recording or analyzing microbial and plant scientific data; recovering and analyzing nucleic acids; AND analyzing and preparing results of research findings for inclusion in manuscripts, reports or presentations; and operating specialized laboratory equipment.
OR
Education: Two full years of graduate level education or a Master's degree if directly related to the position. Related degrees may include: Plant Pathology, Plant Microbiology, Microbiology, or Microbial Molecular Biology.
OR
A combination of specialized experience and graduate level education as described above.

Physical Demands
The work requires some physical exertion, such as regular and recurring walking or bending. In many situations the duration of the activity (such as most of a workday) contributes to the arduous nature of the job. In other situations, there may be special requirements for agility or dexterity such as exceptional hand/eye coordination.

Work Environment
The work involves regular and recurring moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g., working with contagious diseases or irritant chemicals or working outdoors. The employee is required to use protective clothing such as gowns, coats, boots, goggles, and gloves.
